🇷🇺🇺🇦🛤💡On the impact of strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on the logistics of the AFU

With the beginning of massive missile strikes by the Russian Armed Forces on the energy infrastructure in Ukraine, problems began (https://t.me/rybar/41504) with the transportation of military cargo: the cause was power outages, complicating the operation of electric locomotives. The authorities have already promised to solve the problem by more active use of diesel locomotives.

But how realistic are those plans? To do so, we need to analyze the state of the industry and rail transportation in the country.

▪️In 2018, the Ukrainian traction fleet included:

➖1628 mainline electric locomotives,
➖680 mainline diesel locomotives,
➖1258 shunting diesel locomotives.

All of them were not new and required repairs to varying degrees.

▪️At the beginning of the SSO, Ukraine owned only about 250 serviceable mainline diesel locomotives, which in addition were badly worn out. Now there are even fewer: Ukrainian railroad workers lost diesel locomotives in Popasna, Mykolayiv and Polohy during the hostilities.

▪️The general decline of the country's economy and the decline in freight traffic have freed up a significant portion of diesel locomotives for military needs. But even they are still insufficient for simultaneous supply of the AFU, fuel supplies and grain transportation.

▪️The situation is exacerbated by the need to use diesel locomotives for domestic passenger traffic. It is caused by stoppages of mainline electric locomotives on the routes due to loss of voltage in the network after missile strikes.

▪️If the systematic firing continues, the unified Ukrainian power system could collapse, effectively making it impossible to use electric locomotives. In this case, the authorities will be forced to completely stop passenger traffic and use diesel locomotives exclusively to supply the front.

Except that even such forced measures will not be able to fully remedy the situation due to other serious problems:

🔻The transfer of military supplies to diesel locomotives would severely reduce the pace and volume of freight deliveries to the front lines because of their lower average capacity compared to electric locomotives. The problem of diesel fuel shortages will also become more acute.

🔻The Ukrainian railroads mainly use 2TE-116, 2TE10m and 2TE10u diesel locomotives, which were produced at the Luhansk Locomotive Plant. With the beginning of the SSO, the Kiev authorities have lost the possibility of obtaining original parts even under the earlier "gray" schemes.

🔻Lack of stable power supply will affect the operation of the entire railway infrastructure: blocking, locomotive signaling, and switches will not work. There will also be difficulties with the repair of locomotives.

At the moment there is no critical damage to the energy system of Ukraine, which will force the authorities to fully switch over the supplies of military cargoes to diesel locomotives. But that moment will come in any case if the missile attacks and the cumulative effect caused by them continue (https://t.me/rybar/41185).

And it will indeed seriously complicate the logistics of the AFU.

Rybar analysis of effects of power grid strikes on Ukraine's rail network. TL;DR without power rail would only be able to work for military needs and will be complicated for operations of the rail network.

If they're shipping fuel by rail because of gauge size differences it means it's either coming from Moldova or having the wheel assemblies swapped on every train. I know Hungary has this capability but idk about anywhere else.
