It's official, in Germany at least. The Holodomor was genocide and Stalin was worse than Hitler.

Laying the ground work for when the far right control Germany and they can revise the Holocaust as a defensive measure to prevent Judeo–Bolshevism carrying out more Holodomors.

I keep seeing over and over this vague claim that the soviets were repressing the Ukrainian language without any specific instances of that happening or really any verifiable claim whatsoever is this just another thing invented by nationalists after the fact

My understanding is that the repression of the Ukrainian language that is claimed was a reversal of the policy of spreading the Ukrainian language that had previously been in effect. Korenizatsiya, or "indigenization", was the policy in the national republics of the USSR to encourage local language and culture in a de-Russification process. Initially implemented to bring these national groups on board of the socialist project, in the early 30s it was ended and partially reversed because it was considered to be encouraging separatist nationalist tendencies.
Here's a couple wiki articles if you want to have a glance, the first one is a lot more even handed for some reason.

Okay, I am back home and stumbled randomly on the Russian Army's chain of clothing stores which I actually had no idea existed. I mean, I guess I've seen them before but it wasn't until today that my brain registered what I'm looking at:

They seem to have a bunch of pretty nice products actually, though I didn't buy anything. Annoyingly some of their model photos have them featuring some nice pants with zippers on the pockets that they don't seem to actually sell. Anyways, found some more entertaining products on their website later, like this cup:

"Those who don't want to speak to Lavrov"

"will speak to Shoigu"

Note also the motivational quote from Lavrov, which is "loving morons".

so basically the soviets implemented a sort of affirmative action program in addition to promoting minority languages, specifically to counteract the opposite policy which had been part of the tsardom? and then stopped doing that because russians were getting mad for the same reason conservatives get mad at modern affirmative action programs, and because Stalin thought promoting ethnic nationalism weakened the Union as a whole? it seems insanely dishonest to frame this as the soviets specifically oppressing ukrainian culture and language lmao

I'm sure that there was some animosity between groups in the soviet union but never at the level that these idiots state. The soviets went out of their way to preserve and promote minority cultures. Most of these ideas are straight from Lenin. If you want a good read about all this Soviet but not Russian by Willy Mandel (RIP).

Yeah, and local languages were still taught regardless, even ethnic Russians were required to take some classes although after the 1930s everyone had to also learn at least some Russian.

It makes more sense if you just start with the understanding that nations are artificial constructs, and that the Russian and Ukrainian national projects were competing over the same population of peasants who spoke whatever variant of East Slavic the village spoke. The Russian national project just won handily, because Russian was the language of the administration and the economy.

The difference between Ukrainian and Russian is almost entirely in the vocabulary, including a bunch of loanwords for technology that doesn't come up in the village. It's very easy for the languages to muddle up, especially in a unified country with a standardized education system. This is why Surzhyk is so common in Ukraine, it's just people mixing up the vocabulary of two languages with very similar grammar.

The big trick nationalists pull is that they present the non-standard language of the Ukrainian peasantry as the same thing as bourgeois literary Ukrainian. Then they point at peasants adopting standard Russian in the USSR (or even under the Tsar) as the suppression of "their" language. But the choice of language isn't up to bourgeois nationalists. Ultimately, this was clearly repudiated by the defeat of the Ukrainian National Republic in 1918. When Bolsheviks offered the rank and file of Ukraine a better dental plan, the population of Kiev switched sides and abandoned the UNR.

ASK ME ABOUT LUMBER

soviet language policy was officially pro-national. in practice, you needed russian for all sorts of stuff, but you were supposed to be able get by exclusively in kirgiz in kirgizstan, for instance. the soviets recognised ukrainian as the language of a minority nation and assigned ukrainian lessons to even basically russified areas of ukraine.

russia was still the dominant nationality of the soviet union, but the idea that soviet policy was deliberately anti-national in ukraine is nonsense. the great soviet famine was made worse and distributed in part through political action, but as far as i know there's no indication that it was targeted through national criteria; rural areas of ukraine suffered more than urban areas, for instance.
