Portal 2 OST just arrived. You can tell this release has had a lot of love put into it what with the bizarre Folding Insanity packaging. Sounds great too

Barry posted:This looks rad as hell but oof, $50 per LP is a bit much Finding decent pressings of Afro Harping alone will probably set you back $100 or more. A couple of others like Etta James aren’t gonna be much cheaper. If you try piecing together your own set of those titles you’ll quickly find yourself going over 350.

It bothers me that that factors in to their equation. "Well, we can make X more profit and it will still be cheaper than the alternative" is a good way to make sure I never give you my business. I'll find CDs or whatever. It's just plastic and paper.

Records are more than just the music pressed on them. I have two copies of a 7”: first pressing and a reissue. For the reissue, I paid maybe $3, but for the first press, I paid over $100 (was part of a group, don’t remember exact price). I wouldn’t pay more than $5 for a reissue.

The HumminGuru arrived yesterday, after another £46 paid to Fedex for customs charges. Seriously, think long and hard about the various charges you will pay on top of the unit cost for this, it ships from Hong Kong, which was eye wateringly expensive and then customs on top, I almost regretted buying this. I ordered some new inner sleeves yesterday (I'm in the UK, so I get my sleeves from spincare.co.uk) but I wanted to run some records through it to make sure it worked. I had put a batch of 50 through my ordinary, boring, manual spin cleaner and re-sleeved them with nice new inners recently, so I picked Mezzanine from that and tried the new machine. It's alright. The ultrasonic cleaning stage is quiet, a low humming that is then rudely interrupting by the pump emptying the water bath in preparation for the drying stage. Drying is as loud as you might expect, it's not bad, but I won't be putting records through at 6 am. The basic settings give 2 minutes of cleaning and then 5 minutes of drying, I didn't time them so we'll have to take their word for it. After 5 minutes of drying there were still water droplets around the edge of the record, so I put it on another drying cycle for 5 minutes and nothing really changed, not ideal. I slide the switch over to II, which changes the dry time to 10 minutes default (I don't know why I thought this would be different to 2x 5 minutes) and did the second record. Same results, still some droplets left after 10 minutes and I had to dry the last little bit myself. I've got some charity shop finds to clean, and when the postal workers stop striking I'll get my new sleeves, so I'll report back as to it's cleaning prowess in a few days. Preliminary verdict: not worth the money

Dead Goon posted:Preliminary verdict: not worth the money Just my two cents, I’ve gone through about 1,700+ record cleanings with this thing now and there was definitely a soft break in period with the drying process for whatever reason because now I rarely get a record with droplets on the record but also it really has to do with the era of the record, thickness, evenly pressed and how well it rotates in the spindles. Those late 80’s ultra light pressings always give me problems no matter what. https://www.needlesandgrooves.com/threads/new-ultrasonic-vinyl-cleaner-in-the-works-humminguru.1478/ You can poke through this thread and check out different experiences and methods as well. I know some people use surfactants to help with the droplets and generally getting more gunk out of the grooves. I’ve primarily stuck with just distilled water and out of habit now I give the record a quick microfiber cloth dry by grabbing it in one hand with the cloth in that hand and using my other hand to give it a couple spins. I also have cats so cat dander floating in the air and latching onto a dry record is a thing. I’m also looking at where I’m dropping the water. The two jets with the vents on either side I make sure to note not to drop water on those edges because water will collect on the lips of those vents and I’ve sat and watched just to see the process, I’ve seen water flick off the lips of the vents onto the record. Not a lot but just tiny droplets. Worth noting where you pour the water in from.

If the LPs were like $2k on the secondary market and they "only" charged $1k for this reissue, would that still be ok?

I know there are some Portland goons all up in here - anyone wanna buy a ticket to see Goblin live tomorrow for face? I''m seeing John Waters instead so I can't make it. Though if anyone wants to trade a Saturday ticket for a Friday so I could make both, that would be optimum.

But wait, is John Waters not at the Aladdin this year (that's where NP is)? Anyway, I know this wasn't helpful, but I'll see if anyone I know has a spare Saturday ticket to Goblin.

I saw them in DC at the 9:30 on this tour (even though that was late 2021) and it was fantastic, as expected. Letter from an Occupant might be my all time favorite song and Neko can still belt that one out.

I'm about 80% certain these were the two stereos I had as a teenager and felt like a cool guy listening to them. I'd only really know if when I go back to my parents for Christmas my mom ended up keeping them or at least has pictures of me with it. Good memories either way.

I generally try to avoid seeing bands multiple times in relatively quick succession (in favour of spending that ticket money on new-to-me shows), but I'm making an exception for this one to see their performance of Mass Romantic because I'll bet it'll be fantastic (I just saw them in late January 2020; one of my last shows pre-Covid! Well, pre-lockdown at least). My buddy is even going both nights this time (Twin Cinema is tomorrow).
