The reviews for Eternal Embers are apparently Not That Good so hopefully there's nothing locked away in those acts like new skill points or something that would force me to complete it in order to round out a character.

TQ's acts are too long and it really hurts your sense of progression, especially in the first loop when you are generally slow as dirt and still don't have many interesting abilities to play with.

I recall TQ being pretty slow in the early going but it's even slower than I remember when you can't load your alts up with OP gear and fly through everything with XMAX cranked up. But after a few good drops and maxing out Heart of the Oak my Soothsayer really began to turn a corner and now I'm ripping through stuff.

This is why TQ is still my favorite of these games. There are times when your character kinda sucks and is slow and has a hard time fighting things. Then you level up, get some gear and have actual progression into being a badass. You don’t start at badass and quickly progress to giga-badass.

There are a few things I think TQ still does better than most/all other ARPGs:

- Best use of setting for this type of game that isn't Diablo
- One of like three ARPGs that isn't a complete eyesore to look at
- Complexity of interactions between masteries and gear, there's really something for every conceivable build
- Best use of relics/runes/whatever to augment gear, almost every rare drop is worth a second look
- Intense stat porn every time you find an item with +skills
- Main theme still kicks rear end

I remember playing in the beta on steam (now on xbox game pass) and my character was in no way a blind follower of the Imperium, though it might be due to an alteration to what voice lines are being used rather than any changes I did when creating it.

I distinctly remember several lines about how cruel the Imperium is and how it badly needed reform, and elsewhere I saw videos of ones that basically said the Emperor probably wasn't a real God.

What is this heresy?

Speaking of neat games, I know we have Grapple Dog people in here: I've been eyeing this up hoping for a real intense and challenging platformer, akin to something like Celeste, Dustforce, Bionic Commando, Super Meat Boy, and so on. However, the screenshots and art-style make it a bit difficult to determine which route it is going for as it really gives the impression of something casual, as ignorant as that might seem to say. As much as they can be nice, I'm not really down for something that just settles for simple platforming or collecting like Yoshi's Island or even Donkey Kong Country, I want something real sweaty that can start out easy, sure, but keeps getting harder and requires skill and flow to proceed. How does this rate on that scale?

Play ScourgeBringer. Platforms like Celeste, sounds like DOOM. Absolutely sweaty when it comes to boss fights.

I never played Stalker, but the AI in this game is really neat. I love how when you engage a group they make decisions on pushing, getting in cover or backing off. And the Hunters can be trouble. I think I have seen two coordinate, and when another is close they yell for help. Seems like a pretty deep AI system for such simple graphics.

I don't know Grapple Dog but if you're into that kind of game I'd strongly recommend The End Is Nigh if you haven't played it. It's the successor to Super Meat Boy and got maybe 1/10th the marketing that game did, but it's the perfect precision platformer IMO

Sounds good, I will add it to the wishlist!

The 7th Guest posted:

Grapple Dog is Nintendo in its design, it's not a 'challenge' game, it's definitely a 'either go straight through or try to collect the green stars' kind of 2D platformer. There's some trickier stuff in the side challenges but this isn't a Meat Boy or Celeste style game by any stretch. It's more like a lost Nintendo DS title, something that can be enjoyed by younger kids too. It's my #2 game this year but it is not for people who want something with precision.

Ok, good to know. Yeah, I had a feeling it was gonna be one of those games, like Mario, where it can get really challenging and intense, but only in the wayyyyy later stages or the bonus levels: would prefer if it got to that level of challenge nearer the start. Still considering picking it up because it just looks so bloody charming and smooth nonetheless, but I'll wait for a deal since it isn't a perfect match.

Recently picked this up from a Fanatical bundle: definitely gonna check it out as I felt if Grapple Dog didn't pull through it was gonna be the next best option (though was also considering Super Magbot as an option too).

I actually am gonna play games from the jingle jam just because there was wishlisted stuff on there. Ato's a metroidvania I'd been interested in for a while, and Lost Nova's demo was charming. Kaiju Wars has a slick style. Sokpop games are always fun for the one hour of gameplay they provide. Final Vendetta basically looks like a short Final Fight clone so I can definitely cruise through that. Also I realized after the fact that there's a Gray Alien solitaire rpg in there (Ancient Enemy) so I redeemed that as well.

Some stuff, though, IDK. Games like Mech Mechanic Sim and Demolish & Build 2018 seem kinda low effort looking but could still be pretty chill podcast games. Vibrant Venture has a clean look for a 2D platformer but apparently it started as a Roblox game first??? So all the reviews seem to be from Roblox gamers? Hard to trust. (yes it's my turn to be a boomer)

Good deal! Yeah when I say it's a SMB successor I mean it was actually developed by Ed McMillen (in collaboration with Tyler Glaiel, who he's now working with on Mewgenics). It really flew under the radar but I'd say it builds on and refines the Meat Boy formula in every way, with some great tweaks to the physics, a light exploration element, and a really well-designed difficulty curve that pushes you to slowly improve without ever putting any straight-up walls in your way (until you get to the optional secret stuff at least)

Yeah it's a big time for Steam to do a major sale event, which is exactly why indie developers don't release new games during that time, because they'll be buried under the sale content and get no front page exposure (and on top of that, not being discounted at a time when people are only buying stuff that is discounted).

Been playing that new NFS as a trial on EA Play (via Gamepass) and it's actually surprisingly alright. Feels like they tried their hardest to make a Burnout Paradise style game and I don't hate it. The driving model is definitely that weird criterion style where you tap the breaks to engage sort of a drifting mode but it works for this kind of game I think. The game looks incredible in 4k/HDR and runs really well, I sorta hate how all the characters look like Life is Strange characters but I think the cartoon smoke effects on the tires looks neat. They tried something with this game and I'm over here thinking about buying a new need for speed game in 2022.

Police chases are actually pretty reminiscent of the old games when you get into the higher level chases. there's a day/night cycle where you have to "cash in" what you earned during races to proceed but the higher your heat level is the more money you can make so there's a neat risk/reward thing going on. Also an interesting weekly calendar with deadlines for race entries that require different car types/ratings before entering so there's like a time mechanic going on in the background too. I might actually buy it once the trial is over because I've been enjoying it a lot.

Soundtrack is very much just there though.

You can smash into pretty much anything, I don't know what your definition of destroy is but crashes in general are also very reminiscent of Burnout Paradise complete with the camera pulling out wide and giving you a "DRIVEAWAY" if you land on your wheels. You can make other racers wreck although it's not quite the burnout style of shunting or side swiping and sending them flying into guardrails.

Yes these are used to buy "premium skins" for the characters in an in-game store. The skins are otherwise available with the more expensive versions of the game, you can't buy them piecemeal from the Steam Store, you have to use the in-game one. I guess this is a solution to overwhelming the Steam Store with costume DLC entries like a number of fighting games do but I do wish the skins were just unlockable in-game and not just bought. I am not buying the skins or season pass even if I am enjoying the game at the moment.

epic freebies today

i'd encourage y'all to play fort triumph for an hour. i'd love it if more people play this game and they make a sequel. i admit that for the holistic gamers it might not feel like the whole gestalt-y package, but i find the basics of the mechanics to be a nice puzzling dopamine fun. it just has the stuff i want, the stuff not enough of these games have.

heres the review i wrote for it

quote:

I've been tearing through tactical combat games for a while, and this is a standout. It's on a very short list of titles that have thoroughly engaged me and left an impression in my memory, It's the enemy push/pull and environmental interaction that do it. Use an arrow to push a goblin in front of an ally, the ally kicks it into a pillar that falls on its head, it's great!

Where it falls short: elevation is not a mechanic. That means you can't kick an enemy off a cliff to take fall damage, which is what we all really want to do. It also means that high ground bonuses for archers are near nil--if you can even find any high ground.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to play multiplayer versus mode, which is probably fun.

If the devs release a sequel with a sequestered "board game mode" separate from the main campaign and further refined mechanics like including elevation and backstabbing, it will be a hit. I want Fort Triumph 2!

the other freebie is rpg in a box which i would be interested in fiddling with if it has robust combat mechanical options... anybody tried it?
