https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/05/risky-online-behaviour-almost-normalised-among-young-people-says-study

quote:

Risky and criminal online behaviour is in danger of becoming normalised among a generation of young people across Europe, according to EU-funded research that found one in four 16- to 19-year-olds have trolled someone online and one in three have engaged in digital piracy.

An EU-funded study found evidence of widespread criminal, risky and delinquent behaviour among the 16-19 age group in nine European countries including the UK.

A survey of 8,000 young people found that one in four have tracked or trolled someone online, one in eight have engaged in online harassment, one in 10 have engaged in hate speech or hacking, one in five have engaged in sexting and one in three have engaged in digital piracy. It also found that four out of 10 have watched pornography.

Julia Davidson, a co-author of the research and professor of criminology at the University of East London (UEL), said risky and criminal online behaviour was becoming almost normalised among a generation of European young people.

“The research indicates that a large proportion of young people in the EU are engaging in some form of cybercrime, to such an extent that the conduct of low-level crimes online and online risk-taking has become almost normalised,” she said.

The article goes on and tries to link this to the online safety bill but man. "Cyberdeviancy". Trolling and piracy (a victimless crime) being put on the same category as posting revenge porn and posting hate speech? Yeah, alright guys.

In contrast Dermatology is 4 and Plastic Surgery is 13.

I suspect a big part of this is generally poor job satisfaction. You're faced every day with patients that are both challenging to manage and in many cases not really fixable to any real degree. When they go wrong it's a life-threatening disaster and you'll be questioning if it was something you did.

Contrast this to ripping out a hip and banging another in place. Bish bash bosh and the 80 year old can walk again and will give you chocolates on Christmas.

If your survey results show that 40% of teenagers have viewed porn, all they demonstrate is that slightly less than 60% of teenagers lie about sex.

CVs and that then.

I've become pretty institutionalised after close to ten years of NHS working and have decided that I would like the option of seeing if the grass is greener elsewhere. Basically I'd like a job with at least some work from home and the ability to do a 9 day fortnight, or some kind of flexibility anyway.

It's been over a decade since I applied for a non NHS job.

How do I make my CV look good? I think there used to be a goon run service that would brush it up for you but I can't remember what they're called. Is LinkedIn still a thing- I've never used it? I'm utter dogshit at interviews as well, which is part of the reason I haven't looked elsewhere. Also have the vague feeling that I don't really know what I'm doing, and someday someone will find that out, but that seems more common than I thought from reading here.

LinkedIn is very much a thing (for some industries), it's worth having a profile set up as recruiters will check applications against it. It's also useful for job hunting as well, especially if you work in specialist fields.

My tactic with interviews is to expect at least two competency questions. I generally get a list of the 30 most common and prep answers for each (in the expected reply format) so I always have that to fall back on if someone pulls out the 'tell me about a time when you...' questions.

My CV last CV was two a4 pages with a relevant job history (I've bounced around a lot so I only really bullet point out stuff that matches the kind of role I'm applying for).

Do a lot of interviews, don't let rejection get you down because it will happen a lot. Just push through and keep applying.

I don't know what I'm doing in my job. It worries me until I remember that no one else seems to know what they're doing either, and the ones who do are too busy to care.

I got made redundant after fifteen years and used a company called TopCV who were… fine? Sent them my draft CV which was almost entirely notes/job title from fifteen years of performance reviews and they did two versions for, I think, £100. It was “one rewrite” but I got them to do one focussing on sales/business dev and one on mentoring/people dev so two for the price of one really. I probably wouldn’t use it again now but I would if I’d gone another decade without doing one. Bear in mind I did no research - someone I trust recommended them, and now someone you don’t trust has done the same.

I can only speak for computer touching but LinkedIn is definitely still a thing — maybe I’m an outlier but I was kind of pleasantly surprised at how easy it made applying for jobs, getting interviews, etc. (Actually got my current job after the CEO reached out to me on there.)

If you’re specifically looking for flexibility you could also have a look on places like https://peoplefirstjobs.com or https://4dayweek.io but there’s obviously going to be a smaller subset of positions going on there.

General CV stuff — are you after like a template or general advice? To be honest unless you’re after some big finance job for pricks I don’t think anybody really cares about formatting as long as it’s clear and readable (and if you put everything on LinkedIn you might not even need one at all).

I find it weird how much pirating has dropped out of fashion. I quite often see people saying they can't watch so-and-so TV service because they don't pay for whatever service. Just loving :filez: it. I do more than my bit for the corporate TV industry, paying for Netflix, Amazon Prime, NowTV, Disney+, and Apple TV+. No, I'm not paying for Paramount+ or Starz or whatever. And a bunch of stuff doesn't even come out here in any fashion in a timely manner. Most of the ones I do pay for are because I have a fancy TV and it's a hassle to find downloads for, and stream to my TV 4K HDR content. As always, if you're reasonably priced, and it's actually more convenient than pirating, then I'm happy to pay. But they take the piss, so to :filez: I go.

Gabe Newell (steam) said years ago that tackling piracy was about providing a more convenient legitimate service and he was proven completely right.

That being said everyone pirates live football to the point that they openly talk about it on official sports podcasts etc.

There are legal firms in Germany who buy lists of people who are currently (probably unknowingly) seeding literally any media on P2P and make a business of sending them legal threats and rinsing you for money on behalf of whatever media company is impacted and they do it constantly. I know a couple of people who got nabbed for fuckin Black K Klansman being seeding for around five seconds after downloading it (because they couldn't get it legally anywhere) and had to pay 1,200 euro to make them go away.

Tldr: do not P2P in Germany

Also I once got a naughty naughty letter from Virgin media here telling me to stop seeding 'Abba's greatest hits'. I didn't have anything more than an iPhone and playstation at the time. I think they sent a third warning until I just said 'I can assure you that's not me and also how would you prove it' and they never replied. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

:edit: pirating has completely fallen out of common practice but VPNs are hugely on the rise - which is fine because geo-fencing media beyond the depiction of something obscene/something that might impact innocent-until-proven-guilty, itself, is ridiculous
