So, something I just never really interacted in this game significantly was prepared meals. How do I do prepared meals without risking running out of seeds?

Is it mostly safe if I make prepared meals but I forbid the use of seeds?

There's a sub-menu of the food stocks page where you can set what dwarves do and don't cook with. You can turn off seeds there and then it's completely safe.

Don't actually 'f'orbid seeds because I believe in that case nobody will plant them either (unless that's what you want).

What I often did during the first couple of years was a lot of gathering in the biome, and since I tended not to go into really forbidding areas I could often grow surface crops inside of the walls once I had 'em up.
