idk about hospitals but your GP can say "I don't think you need that test/medicine/procedure" and not write it in the notes for your visit so when it turns out you did need that you have no record or recourse to prove they denied your care

one thing which always haunts me a bit about mao is that under his rule life expectancy in china went from about 40 years to about 60 years, in *the world's largest country* there were massive disasters and they basically just make a blip. the sheer number of human life years that amounts to is *staggering*. one can attribute much of it to the end of the period of war and confusion, but mao was the guy who ended that period and brought about something like stability.

Which tbh is why I am on board with China's Belt and Road initiatives and dealing with all kinds of regimes no matter how distasteful. Developing the material conditions is a massive net good in and of itself. If indeed it leads to class consciousness and political change afterwards it is the best thing that ever happened to humanity.

Yeah I'm not entirely convinced either because I live in country with good standards of living and class consciousness does not exist. And the countries that did go communist were not exactly known for having great material conditions at the time of their revolution. But gently caress it, developing infrastructure is still going to materially improve the lives of millions so it is entirely possible to say if it is good or bad.

This is like an extension of Barthes’ death of the author to an absurd conclusion, where the artist’s life and intentions have been supplanted so completely by the audience that the artist can be replaced with a machine generating fakes and that’s completely acceptable.
