Turns out showing youtube how to make a bomb, then setting it off in your back yard gets some people in the government slightly concerned about things.

I wonder how long we got before someone recreates the 'nuclear boyscout' incident entirely on video without considering the consequences that the original guy had as a result. Yes I remember the loon who took pictures of his contaminated kitchen, but a live stream of the authorities dragging an idiot away as he makes pleas that it's entirely legal and only for educational purposes would be great.

I think technically there was also some medieval nun who came up with the first ones as a joke, and I think it says something about English that it's now proper usage.

In the same vein, I vaguely recall a Youtuber who built a quad-copter drone with a mount and mechanical actuator attached to a handgun. He posted a video showing how he built it and included clips of him remotely firing the handgun. I think that got both the FAA and FBI to pay him a visit. Apparently weaponizing a drone is less than legal.

Rent-A-Cop posted:Electronic triggers are an ATF no-no because they're basically always legally a machine gun. Nope. Electronic triggers that repeat are an ATF no-no - here's a writeup on an electronic trigger: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/03/bullseye-from-1000-yards-shooting-the-17000-linux-powered-rifle/ According to a bunch of NRA-style sites: "Any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger." Given that you can presumably still buy a trigger that fires one bullet on pulling the trigger and one on release, and it's also "legal" to create a hand-cranked gatling gun (presumably only if it's inconvenient to hook up a motor to said crank) so the drone case would probably be "legal" as long as you had a dedicated single-action button for firing without any auto-repeat (or a separate controller, etc). However, the FAA would get you even with a single-shot gun per https://jrupprechtlaw.com/prohibition-of-weapons-on-drones/ quote:Section 363 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 created the following law: So much for making a Crocodile Dundee drone, alas.

Basically anything electronic that is also semiautomatic is considered 'easily converted to fire full auto', which then means it's full auto, and illegal. More or less exactly for that reason. The ATF has some real *creative* ideas on the specific readings of the GCA and how congress has defined certain terms. These are the same people that say that a boot lace and a Garand is a machinegun, and will try to argue in court that you're a dangerous criminal for having two of those things together.

Up an exposed slope, so some level of heating is needed to ensure your parking lot operates without someone needing to clear snow. This is exactly correct and I"m going to add some technical jargon to it. They were cutting in induction loops to sense vehicles for parking controls, aka, the arm barrier or a counting device. The concrete had a snowmelt system which run a glycol mixture so they don't freeze and break the pipes if the system isn't working or is turned off during cold weather.

This is an example of a weaponized chilling effect. The idea is if you have no idea where the line is and crossing it sends you to prison forever, most people stay the hell away instead of playing I'm-not-touching-you games. This phenomenon is why courts shot down W Bush's plan to let law enforcement subpoena records of what people check out from libraries: it was transparently a tactic to scare people away from topics the government doesn't like.
