'Dubstep' is kind of a bad word in 2022 so it weighed on me heavily whether I should tag this one as simply "140 mix," but I figured that would be disingenuous; it is through-and-through a Dubstep Mix.

Meant to watch this a few days ago but just getting to it now. This is sick. You'd think this sound would've gotten old by now considering we're like a decade removed from the big dubstep craze, but nope! I'm still into it!

There's a reason why the "I especially like the bit that goes WUB WUB WUB" meme exists. Dub is good. Dubstep is almost universally bad.

Yeah I mean that is true but it’s equally true of all EDM besides the auteur soundscape guys. Dubstep is no more homogeneous than psytrance or house music

As someone who got back into electronic music right around when Dubstep blew the gently caress up, I'm unashamed to say I love the archetypal aggro bro tunes from your Skrillexes, KtNs, Excisions etc. But I find that right around 2013, maybe earlier, the novelty of that sound wore off, most of the best producers moved onto more of a Trap sound, and innovative tunes that make you go "whoa" became very difficult to find in a sea of cookie-cutter stomping/headbanging poo poo. There are a few names I always keep on my radar who are still making waves but the whole scene seems to have settled into a very unfortunate sound. The real dubby deeper stuff has a lot more sticking power for me personally (I download a LOT more of it while eschewing stuff I know to be aggro), but yes it still is very formulaic in its own way.

Now it seems like people are trying to make a delineation in two ways: I see a lot of stuff genre tagged as 'Deep Dubstep' so you know it's some heady poo poo (like I couldn't tell from the fact that it was on Deep Medi Musik or Tempa); likewise some of the stompy headbanging producers have started using the genre name 'Riddim', which is kind of embarrassing, because... isn't that already a subgenre of Dancehall? Even if it's not, it's wholly inappropriate.

Like I said there are artists I know to be screwface heavy poo poo but will ALWAYS check out their stuff - Excision is the guy who comes to mind, and I'll always go see him play live if I can afford it (IMO his live show peaked with the Executioner 2 stage). Even he is kind of falling off in my repertoire though. And conversely there are some producers who really surprise you by putting out something uncharacteristic, like Rusko's last two EPs were almost all really good Jumpup D&B. Or Caspa's latest EP with Bump This, absolutely heavier than his usual output - there's a reason why that was the mix's closer (although I kinda bungled the EQ tradeoff from the previous song). I must have sat there and listened to that tune three times in a row when it came out.

As an aside, I may have told this story before but one of my fondest memories of first getting back into raving at age 25 with a pretty little raver girlfriend who took me to shows: We were at Bassmentality, I can't remember who was DJing but they played Up In the Club by Terravita and this row of five or six shirtless dudes locked arms and slid onto the dancefloor, going off and 'singing along' to the bassline. That was the moment I was like "OK, this poo poo rules."

They call it riddim because that’s what all the oldhead UK dj’s told them to call it when the grimy LA kids started making heavy bass music with trap beats and club rappers and they objectively know better, since they either invented that kind of music or were standing in the room next to the guys who did.

Dubstep from a decade ago:
Rusko
Benga
NiT GriT
Borgore
Chasing Shadows
Bassnectar (sorta)
Excision
12th Planet
Flux Pavillion
Zed’s Dead
SKREAM
Skrillex
Datsik

Big festival dubstep of today:
Excision
SVDDEN DEATH
Subtronics
Midnight Tyrannosaurus
Boogie T
Ganja White Night
Eptic

The big difference to me is that the DJs from last decade all had extremely distinct sounds, really unique signatures that made ever show feel unique (maybe not Datsik, lol). The dubstep producers of today all sound entirely homogenous. With a gun to my head I couldn’t tell any of the current producers apart (except Boogie T, I guess), because all of them, ALL OF THEM, are direct descendants of the Datsik/Excision lineage. Bro-Step became the single biggest genre in American EDM, and that’s what all of the producers touring today broke into the scene making, because it’s the music they all discovered partying through.

It really sucks because I'm in Denver which has a loving electronic music venue and support scene to envy but its almost all Bass music. I want to go to an Exision show for the production but the musics pretty repellant to me.

Disgraced has-been sexpest and The Most Punchable Face In EDM, Datsik, is trying to make a comeback.

A couple of days ago he posted some videos to IG where he, while shirtless and clearly intoxicated, went off a bit with gems like "what if I said I was sorry ... I'm trying to do better ... Come on ... Give me that opportunity ... I really appreciate you all and I'm sorry," quickly spiraling into "what happened to EDM twitter ... why did you guys turn into such dicks ... I love bass music, do you???" Then he posted some studio footage of a couple of new tunes (that apparently leaked last year).

I hate this guy so loving much and it's appalling that anyone at all continues to work with him. He should have taken the hint years ago and just disappear back to that garbage fire Kelowna to work at a Boston Pizza or something.

Yeah, the sad thing is that Datsik isn't actually that bad a producer. An actual guilty pleasure of mine (in an otherwise shameless pleasure, "gently caress you I won't apologize for enjoying dubstep") is that I dig a handful of his tunes. Firepower was dope (and the Munchi remix was great too), and one or two tunes/remixes by Ephwurd (of which he is half) are alright. Even the 'new' stuff he posted after his crybaby rant has some modern sensibility to it (one of the track has these big reverbey stabs which I hear a lot in heavy bass music these days), and sounds like 'his' (the other track has this goofy 'gangster' bass melody that sounds like 2011).

But I can't abide a sexpest of that calibre. I wonder even if there is a way to redeem oneself against those accusations, like what would it honestly take? Actually I don't really care. I hope someone goes to his 'charity' show in MN and actually punches him in the face (someone on twitter offered up $1000 to do so).

I'm a bit disappointed by that NERO/RL Grime collab, to be honest. RL Grime is one of the few Trap producers I keep an eye on because VOID was so drat good and unique, but it sounds like he's not even there on that track. Sounds like cookie-cutter 'melodic Dubstep/Trap' to me.

Normally I stick to the D&B thread but this one is about half Other Stuff, so here it is.This one starts with some Dubstep, gets a bit silly with the Trap stuff, and kicks into some two-step Neurofunk with a little cooldown surprise at the end. Enjoy!

Barry Can’t Swim and Tell were two of my big discoveries this year. I feel like Tell must have just gotten bored of house being too easy because he moved on to making pretty mediocre to bad French bedroom pop trying to replicate the Thomas Mars career arc.
