based on the subtitles two legged man must sound like Japanese man in Japanese. guessing two legged is two words and Japanese is one word. everyone knows Japan is Nippon so yep classic dad joke

Yeah that's what I thought So: Nihon = Japan -jin = suffix to mean "person" Nihon-jin = Japanese Japanese is confusing in that it modifies its counting words based on the properties of what is being counted. So: ni = 2 -hon = specific suffix for counting things that are long and thing, e.g. legs (or bottles and other things like that) Nihon = 2 long skinny things The joke is that Nihonjin means Japanese but, implying legs are being counted, nihonjin could also mean two legged person. Yeah there's no way anyone would fully get this without knowing some Japanese.

I felt like the joke would have worked better if he had a friend to play the other part. I still wouldn't have gotten the joke but I wouldn't be wondering if that was part of the joke I didn't get. edit: Oh gently caress wait is that part of the joke??

bike tory posted:Yeah that's what I thought The counting system also breaks down around seven and has specific words for well quote:On the other hand, although 7 is considered a lucky number in Japan, its reading – しち (shichi) – contains the Japanese mora し (shi) as well, so it's way more common to say its other reading: なな (nana) And if you get it wrong you sound like a dumbass but most people not speaking their native language sound like dumbasses (sorry no offense to anyone, English is hard, Spanish is hard, German is hard all in different ways.)

I thought the whole joke was the fact it's posted on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor being attacked. edit: The day before, but goons finding out today is still worth noting.
