even me, a socialist who overall limits the amount of "stuff" I have (constant decluttering, live in a tiny 1 br 1 ba condo, etc.), and avoids television, social media, a lot of other poo poo that's awful and full of advertising (imo), just feels completely overwhelmed by it. there always seems to be something to buy or upgrade or repair or w/e. I just upgraded my phone to a "new" one (2.5 year old refurb) because my phone was eight goddamn years old and was dying. And my computer because it really can't keep up anymore, but that's definitely been accelerated by WFH. And i just bought a bunch of new clothes! But I haven't bought a single clothing item since covid started! my clothes had holes in them!

obviously inflation is part of this as well, but also the fact that prices had been artificially low for a very long time due to extremely cheap labor and cheap materials.

I'm starting to really loathe working with computers because every task requires a specific thing-doer and you never have that thing, it's always just more poo poo to buy and then toss in a drawer.

I can't do a firmware install on a printer because I don't have a flash drive. The only flash work issued me is an encrypted one, which doesn't work outside of an operating system, and since I don't have any files to move around and have access to cloud storage, such a thing is just completely loving useless to us. It's a flash drive, but not juuuust the right kind, and it was made more complex as a gimmick and as a result it's useless. Monitors have HDMI, Display Port, DVI, or VGA, usually two kinds, sometimes only one. If you're working with older stuff it's DVI on the video output, if your monitor is newer, you need an adapter. If you have a big environment, you'll probably want each permutation of adapter because it will eventually come up and you will not have time to rifle through yet more drawers for the one specific thing doer. I spend so much time everyday rifling through drawers and my backpack looking for the latest tiny object I need I move only one step forward towards getting anything done.

At this point I'll space out at my desk most of the day not doing anything at all because I'm so sick of going out there to discover I need a Thingmaster 5000, say oh that's easy, go back to get it, and find we only have Thingmaster 6000s and 2000s and then I look like a loving loser idiot because I can't clear that printer error when I said I would. I'm not going to get any of this poo poo done anyway no matter what I do, why even waste energy?

DisplayPort introduced me to one-way adapters as I needed two separate ones to connect a DP source to an HDMI display and an HDMI source to a DP display :shepspends:

The EU actually managed a small victory on this front by mandating that all chargers have to be USB C. It's not much in the grand scheme of things, but it's a start.

Apple is being assholes about it too, they're putting the USB C on the wrong end of the cable so they can keep their lightning port in the device.

they put it on devices with a GPU that can handle an external hidpi display, lightning can only do as much as usb 2.0

it’s so inconsistent. the laptops are c, AirPods are lightning, the beats equivalent of AirPods are c, the iPad Air is c, and the watch is its own thing entirely.

decent solid reliable thumb drives from known brands like SanDisk are like five bucks for 32 gigabytes, and sketchy 1TB+ for $30.

Firmware encrypted drives are annoying because of the limited applications they can be reused for. I have one that was given to me and it's annoying that I can't just easily throw it into a laptop or PS3 or whatever. I am baffled though how you can work on computers for a living and not have a single flash drive on hand. It would be like being an auto mechanic and not having a 10mm wrench or socket of any kind.

All those graphics cards just switched to mining some other coin though, it's not like the miners are just going to go "darn, you beat us, guess we'll throw away the entire global supply of graphics cards that we've bought over the last half decade".

e: Oh good Marketplace covers that, I didn't expect them to so I didn't initially check lmao

quote:

Meghan McCarty Carino: So ethereum has reduced its power intake. Has that had much of an effect on the crypto sector’s electricity consumption overall?

De Vries: Well, that’s a much more difficult question to answer because the thing is, these devices that were previously being used in ethereum were mostly graphic cards, and graphic cards can quite easily be repurposed, for example, for the mining of other digital currencies. It’s even the case that as these ethereum miners were forced to shut down and remove their machines from the data center space they were using, bitcoin miners that previously were unable to find the space they needed for their machines took this space that became available after the ethereum miners left and started using their energy, and therefore limiting the amount of energy reduction we have globally from this change in the software of the ethereum system.

Amazon lets you download music for offline play.

In my experience, it doesn't matter. When I drive through mountains and canyons where signal drops out, it will just finish the track it's on and not start another until I have cell reception again. Like it has to authenticate every song as it cues up, and if it can't call home, you ride in silence.

they probably have a no unencrypted usb mass storage device policy as well which would be the bigger issue to complain about.
