Ooh that sounds easier to paint too, I eventually plan to have stuff like blood splashes on the snow and painting that on solid flock seems like it wouldn't be fun.

From the Warp has a good overview of various ways to do snow bases. The modeling snow + water effects combo looks the most natural and I plan on using it in the future (have the supplies, just nothing to use them on - my 30k stuff is all desert bases), but there's several other good approaches in there.

It depends what kind of snow you want. Thick powder on a mountain? Slushy snow in a bog? Hard grey snow in an urban environment? What theme are you going for?

What do you guys use for backdrops/lighting?

I'm trying to sort out a solution that doesn't involve me moving all my painting stuff out of the way constantly. Might now I'm using 2 Ikea tertials with diffusers, but the arms don't seem to hold their position very well. Very floppy

E: something like this seems really practical, I just don't want to be coming up with new solutions every six months. A more general setup so I can take photo/video mid painting would be ide.

New day new model!

with this model, I tried the following:-

(1) source lighting, where I tried to drybrush an orange/yellow coming out of the eye in the middle.

(2) I glazed the tentacles with a sparkle craft paint called 'Dragonfly'.

(3) I couldnt really fix the robot eyes, it's too in there and nothing quite works.

(4) I tried to make it so the drone was a gold/Bronze that was severely weathered and eaten, the tentacles eating at it slowly with a greenish effect, I dont yet have the paint that nails the 'green rust' effect so I went with the necron technical I had on hand.

any critique or advice is welcome!

I haven't yet seen a base that couldn't use some topical application of thinned gloss varnish to represent slush and half-melted snow.

I really love these. I'm not *sure* the light effect works; it looks more like just yellow colour on the lit objects. But it looks *amazing*. That dragonfly paint is fantastic too! So shiny. I would not have noticed anything about the robot eyes if you hadn't mentioned.

I am a beginner myself and don't have much advice but I love what you've done here. Fantastic.

Hey guys quick question is Verdigris paint the same color as ‘patina’?

Because I’m debating wether to get verdegris paint from Vallejo or just buy this patina color from my local art shop:-

FolkArt Acrylic Paint in Assorted Colors (2 oz), 444, Patina

I gotta say, I am so far very happy with the FolkArt line from using them, and since they’re widely available here I’ll probably stick with them for my workhorse colors unless there’s an absolutely necessary shade that only miniature paint specialists sell.

Is it just me, or are Pro Acryl’s Purple and Plum nearly identical? Meanwhile they don’t have a rich mid tone purple in their line like Citadel Xereus Purple/Lich Purple or Vallejo Hexed Lichen. I’m loving Pro Acryl paints and just a bit disappointed in this small omission/overlap. Guess I’m hunting for some Hexed Lichen in stock somewhere.

For this specific application, that Folk Art paint is probably fine. The tone is about the same and you can just water the crap out of that stuff and since the pigmentation in is is so bad, that will actually make it work BETTER. I swear by GW/Citadel Nihilakh Oxide (or however it's spelled) but anything to get that effect is a total game changer on metallics.

As an aside, I LOVE seeing your hobby journey and enthusiasm; always post!

I've always used Vallejo paints along with some Citadel washes & technicals. I checked out a new local game shop recently and they've got full lines from both, plus AK Interactive, P3, Army Painter, Scale Color, Turbo Dork, and Woodland Scenics. Anything special among those brands I should grab next time I'm there?

I've personally enjoyed using Pistachio from AK interactive to get a skeletor vibe for some skeletons. Gobi Brown and Kalahari Orange are really lovely scale paints I use a lot for more interesting leathers and fabrics. AK's pure white is supposedly quite good

I'm a huge fan of P3. The flip top pots are antiquated but if you can deal with it they're surprisingly good. Cover well, don't require a ton of thinning but can thin into a glaze easily. Some choice cuts from them and why:

Blighted Gold. Versatile and amazing. Base coat every gold or brass object with this. My favorite gold color to use, covers very well too. It's the exact same color as S75's necro gold, which you apparently have at the store. So yeah, uhh, get either of them. They're extremely useful.

Frostbite. Haven't found a paint I like as much as this one for the very specific purpose: making things look cold and frosty. The powdery drybrush effect works well get that small nucleation effect snow gets when it's building up on a surface, particularly useful for metals. For a white paint the coverage isn't all that bad, but it really shines when drybrushing.

The rest are just useful. If you see a color you like when at the store, give it a try. Those two are paints that you won't find in other lines so they're the ones to keep your eyes out for.

There are a few things that should be noted about those Vallejo acrylic metal color paint.

The stuff has virtually no surface tension so it gets pulled up to the ferrule of brushes very easily. This does make it extremely easy to paint with and a small amount will go far on a mini. But I find this makes it a bit hard to get that nice consistent edge highlight because the consistency is different then other paints. It dries on a dry palette quite quickly but will separate on a wet palette.

The stuff is orders of magnitude shinier than other metal paints and even a dark metal like steel will reflect a lot of light.

Lastly vallejo has an annoying naming scheme so just make sure that you are getting what you want. The acrylic metal color is water based whereas I believe the liquid metal range is alcohol based.

A workaround that I figured out is to wick off a little bit on a paper towel like you would a glaze before doing super fine detail work

I've found that if you're painting terrain, latex house paints are fantastic - you've got a wide variety of colors to pick from, it waters down with plain tapwater, is easily airbrushable, and if you want a particular GW color, all you have to do is put some on an index card and have them color match it. They can't do neons, but pretty much every other color is fair game.

Still haven't varnished the dragon rider to be and to flock the base, but I did get my Eltharion proxy done to my liking.

On the topic of motivation and getting stuff painted (and I know this was a few pages back, but whatever). I'd been one of those people who would get one or two models done, not be happy with it, and let it sit until I could strip them and try again. However, as the saying goes, "perfect is the enemy of done", and I'd rather have a decently painted army instead of a handful of models leading a grey tide. If it helps, I'd actually heard a song that might help keep people motivated. (It doesn't hurt that Marc is also a really talented dude, and his music is nice to have on in the background in general.)

Army Painter:
- definitely grab their basic washes (soft, strong, dark, flesh tones), a good match for oldschool GW stuff.
P3:
- mostly feels and paints like the really old GW paints line, down to the soft cap pots. If you're missing those paints go for it.
- don't get their metallics, they're bad.
Scale Color:
- super smooth pigment
- might have worse coverage, but it seems a feature and not an oversight (goes smooth but might need another coat for full coverage).
- their inks are extremely concentrated, e.g. I have a red ink that gives decent effect directly on black primer!
- very nice metallics, including some colored ones, with absolute dogshit labeling (naming them after metal music subgenres was a cute idea that never worked in practice)

Plus some of those launched their own Contrast-equivalent paint lines, I know S75 and AP did, but I don't know enough to name the differences between them.
