Yeah you just got to zone out and let your instincts guide you. Unless you're doing collectibles, then you need cold hearted focus. Gathering is a thing of contrasts.

I'm just trying to go through life without looking stupid.

It's not working out too well...
So I just did the quest "The Parting Glass".

That was, uh, some quest.

Good news is that I might actually be able to start Heavensward before the end of the year. What I'm wondering though is if there's consequence in returning to Ul'dah, apart from the game and the story not totally meshing. That's where I have my free home teleport set for, so I'm wondering if maybe I should temporarily change it to [spoiler]Ishgard when it becomes available.

no consequence. Guards make comments like "I heard what happened. They say I have to arrest you, but I'm far too busy standing here to have seen anything".

There are no consequences, for reasons that the plot will explain when you get there. You may still want to change your home point -- lots of back and forth to Ishgard in HW -- but there are no actual travel restrictions.

Which is hilarious, because it explains both the Sultansworn, who don't believe for a moment that you're actually the one who did it, and the Brass Blades, who aren't being paid nearly enough to try to arrest someone who 4v1'd 1v1'd Ultima Weapon.

Another thing to remember with the Brass Blades is that Y'shtola probably killed a ton of them when she collapsed that tunnel while Yda and Papalymo obliterated a hallway full of them, so they got a really good lesson on not loving with Scions

I hate to tell you this but the underlying structure and gameplay of the MSQ quests never really changes much from the ARR times. The storytelling just gets better.

Yeah, I get this, all MMO quests are basically "go there, kill this, pick 15 leather skins", but in ARR, especially Titan arc, it's literally "go to person A, pick item, go to person B, give item, go to person C on another side of continent, read 2 lines about some irrelevant poo poo, go to person D".

Yeah, Titan to about level 44 in ARR is the worst stretch of the entire game for that stuff, although there's also a lot of plot post-Titan that actually matters. The pacing will improve, at least.

There is only one other quest like that and they cut it out of the storyline. Specifically I'm talking about that loving wine quest from the Ivalice raids (which, ironically enough, also involves the Company of Heroes and a pointless, irrelevant fetch quest.) but you no longer need to do it in order to finish the questline.

Ironically I loved the wine quest because it's one of those rare times they crank up the humor and it's hilarious since the setting is usually played straight and a bit dry.

The titan lead-up is easily the worst part of the game for me, and imagine that they trimmed A LOT of quests from that with their recent updates. Ironically it was around that point that the original free trial ended, they made the best decision to extend it to not only the end of ARR but HW as well.

But yeah as other said, the MSQ still involve a lot of fetch quests, though the pacing gets better and it's better disguised so you don't feel it as much as during the titan arc

It's only the Final Battle once all the players are ready.

Titan arc's problems are honestly aggravated by how urgent everything is supposed to be—there are other rough spots like it but it never quite reaches the same combination of "presented as urgent" and "utterly menial fetchquesting that doesn't even hide what it is".

Dareon

Plus, Y'shtola, ostensibly supposed to be helping you on this and having already complained of the urgency, merely stands there staring at the dude the entire time.

That's one of the best ways things get better later, your Scooby Gang starts going "We'll go find this thing, these two will go search that area, which leaves this part for you, buddy."

They didn't actually trim much from the Titan arc. The intros and 2.x content lost more.

There was no way to salvage the arc short of giving an option for us to say "I don't actually care, best of luck" and going to the casino until someone calls to say the resort owner will pay to stop the ground shaking please.

Hours of our time just to get directions to the door.

Corrupted Crystal Hell is also annoying but the framing makes it come off as less memorably dire for most, imo. People remember Cheese Mistake questline because Titan could decide that Limsa goes back to the sea at any moment and the Company of Heroes is still pulling this poo poo, while Corrupted Crystal Hell isn't urgent, just bad because the writers won't let the WoL say what they need so you run in circles for a bit.

Both are symptoms of the devs needing to deliberately waste the player's time during ARR so they had time to add more stuff, though, so I'm not going to say you're wrong for hating either. Deliberately tedious design is still tedious design.

Theoretically, they were trying to make sure you weren’t interested in fame. The problem being of course if they found you unworthy then who’s going to take care of Titan? There didn’t appear to be a Plan B, so it comes off as they’re all idiot assholes.

[in Russian] Oof.

As someone working my way through the MSQ for the first time, having recently finished Stormblood, ARR is leagues behind the rest of the game in terms of drudgery. Even when HW or StB makes you go back and forth to do something, there's at least an interesting story behind it, and the greatly improved zone design helps a lot. I think the worst bit of the post-ARR MSQ so far is probably the Loth ast Gnath section of the Dravanian Forelands, and even that's way better than its equivalent sections in ARR.

I think why corrupted crystals bothers me more than Company of Heroes is crystals requires the main character to be stupid/bad at communication. CoH are giving you the runaround, but like half of crystals would not have happened if you could ask a few more questions or explained exactly what you needed.

The Company of Heroes refuse to tell you how to get to Titan because they don't want to feel bad if you die. They're willing to let the primal continue to do what it's doing until you pass their tests and gain their approval, there's no practical merit to the tasks and they don't offer material assistance. Once the tests are completed they declare you Titan-slayer before the trial even takes place.

Self-important gatekeeping dipshits who wanted a party. The man paying for everything is aghast that you've been treated so poorly by his employee.
