I'm sure some of you know what this is. First, one of the cyclops that plagued me carried that slab in. Next, I razed a necromancer tower that was too close to me and brought back all it's loot for my library, not remembering that some of those books are evil. Before I know it I have 20 necromancers. I don't really want to see what happens if we get a siege and all the butcher garbage gets raised, so I went through all the written material to pull out the necromancy books, walled them and the slab up and expelled all the necromancers. Now the elves are pissed at me (possibly for unrelated reasons but I like to think the horde of necromancers I kicked out on their doorstep was a problem for them) and I wouldn't be surprised if more towers pop up.

I love this game!

Huh, a necromancer showed up in my very first immigrant wave on this fort and I just figured since he didn't seem to be doing anything evil I'd put him in charge of my military and let him do his thing because seemed like a necromancer on my side to defend the fort would be a good thing

Should I have not put a necromancer in charge of my militia?

There have been a lot of attempts to test weapon efficiency and effectiveness using arena mode etc. and the consensus just seems to be "Weapons help" and steel is generally superior to everything not clown-based. You do need crushing weapons against undead. There's some data that shows picks may actually be the most effective dwarf weapons, largely because they compress a lot of force on a relatively sharp point. Overall someone needs to do a lot of new testing.

It's a 3rd party app that in prior versions let you program extensive dig macros so you could, e.g., just hit a few buttons and have your whole fort laid out. None of those macros work any more because all the keybindings changed.

I had a bunch of neat designs I liked saved (a spiral staircase, fractal workshop layout, etc.) and would just replicate them with each fort.

I'd have to redesign most of them anyway just due to minecarts existing now but still. Arg.

Let's say I make a dining hall zone, but at the time it's made, it's got 1 table and 1 chair. just adding stuff into it will count towards that room in the future, right? Like once I fully flesh it out with more tables, chairs, decorative stuff, smooth/engrave everything, etc etc etc?

Also, is there a way to specify what goes into a meal in the kitchen? I've got a metric assload of various prepared fish, I'm farming quarry bush leaves, cave wheat, and I have other assorted bits and odds and ends and I want to make mid-to-high-tier meals for my dwarves. I'm assuming if I put a stockpile next to the kitchen, probably assign that pile to it, and fill it with the ingredients I want to use, then that should suffice? Or will Urist McCook go and throw 4 piles of leaves into a meal and call it gourmet?

So it looks like I don't have a single sedimentary layer at the site the tutorial picked for me, I've dug down to around z-110. Could I make do without it, and would that just be relying on traders and smelting stuff?

Also I found a little pocket of magma and released it, but some seems to have disappeared.

Does it cool off and go away in some circumstance? I was going to build a smelter on top but those in-between tiles just went away. I can still build some but I'm afraid more of it will disappear. And do I just build a grate on the z level above, and then a smelter on top of that?

The game does track temperature. I think if the magma isn't deep enough it will start losing temperature and solidify into rocks.

To build magma-powered buildings you need to leave a square open and position the top middle square of the workshop over the hole to the magma.

If I remember right when you designate a room as a temple you can dedicate it to a specific God and when you mouse over the names it will show you how many people worship that God in your fort.

I also have two necromancers who migrated in the very first wave. No trouble from them yet.

Also was checking out a random dwarf and:

Which of us don't choose to live an orderly life after being rained on a bit too many times? (What a cool feature.)

I was also checking my tavern and-

It's a "sacred beard" - a priest of "The Bearded Creed" faith. It's also a, well,

And indeed it has no vision. This hasn't stopped it from becoming a legendary miller, dyer, and beekeeper, as well as having legendary skills in persuasion, negotiation, lying, and consoling. I guess when you're LITERALLY AS OLD AS THE WORLD you pick up a few things.

I hope someone makes a workshop mod that lets you read legends without having to do the whole retire fort -> read legends thing. I would love to know the story behind Ono Itekuda.

Anyway, interestingly enough, this fortress hasn't had many visitors at all. I don't know if my other fort was just in a better location or what, but I had something like 100 bards living in my fortress after a few years. In fact it made me choose to start a new one because having so many bards for a couple years before they do anything useful seemed like a bad idea in hindsight. Well, now I haven't gotten any petitions at all despite having visitors! It's a much slower start but it's been quite a bit of fun anyway. The only thing of note was a cougar that some peasant hand-chopped in the throat and a human bodyguard brained with a pike as their caravan started to move out.

I think you can build the cage that contains the thing where you intend on releasing them. After it's been built you can open the cage through a menu, or hook it up to a switch to open remotely if you are doing some kind of rad roman style fighting pit in the middle of your tavern which I assume is what this is for

Tanks still suck but you don't gotta hand it to the Axis either.
As someone who played a ton of the version just before steam release, some quick notes on weapon materials that should still apply unless there has been a MAJOR material property overhaul/combat physics upgrade.

Yes, silver war hammers are very effective, and considering their pros (silver is everywhere, and not needed for armor) often a useful go-to.

HOWEVER your humble iron spear is more versatile on an untrained dwarf and as long as you arent fighting something armored in iron+ these will usually fit almost every target type sans zombies.

Cheap trap material: GLASS. If you have magma, green glass weapon traps shred and maim like nobodys business while using no important resource to make. Unfortunately trap component prices have been nerfed heavily so glass axe blades no longer net a thousand urists, and are more comparable to wood trinkets.

Do you have them assigned to a barrack and then have the option checked to leave their weapons and ammo in the barracks? I'm not sure if that matters but something to try toggling.

This is correct

I came here to post that "The Hateful Faith" wants me to make 'em a church. Normally I would have said yes immediately, but the name made me wonder. I checked it out and they have 11 members in my 102 dwarf fort of deeplance. gently caress no, you don't get your own temple. Every other faith has 40+ members.

The kicker is that The Hateful Faith worships the god Bocash, and also worships the domain of Theft.

Bocash is the god of theft. He also has 75 worshippers in my fort.

The gently caress. This is some seriously nitpicky religious sect stuff here.

not much else interesting is going on in deeplance but im taking more pictures... idk i might not write up a part 2, i think it'd be easier to just note the funny stuff as it happens.

I've re-assigned the uniform a couple of times to make them refresh it - that worked to force them to pick up quivers when not all did, but still not ammo

Not playing atm so I can't check but there's a setting... somewhere in the refuse settings i think? to 'auto-forbid fired ammo', so dwarves dont go running out into danger to pick up ammo. It's on by default afaik so toggle that should do the trick (IDK if it will unforbid the already fired ammo)

Starting to get the hang of my first fortress, the breadth and depth of the game was overwhelming at first, but I feel like I'm slowly learning.

Two questions: Is there an easier way to keep a supply of spare clothes other than manually making a work order and stockpile space for each piece of clothing?
Also, any reason why my dwarves won't haul worn clothes to the topside dumping zone? I'm thinking either the distance is an issue, or it might be that a bunch of dwarves are pissy and will just hang out in the temple? The clothes have been marked as trash.

Story-tax for the gangtag:
I had a pretty bad thirst crisis during the second winter. I'd recently relocated my fortress several levels down to get closer to the cave system I'd discovered, and I was messing around with the layout. Meanwhile a bunch of adventurerers visiting my tavern, apparently open to the public, had drank my barrels dry.

Managed to stave off a death spiral by foraging the entire map and brewing up as fast as I could, but by then I'd lost six dwarves to thirst.

Next year, I decided to build a channel from a topside river down to my fort. I figured I'd need to lead the water to a chamber with a floodgate not connected to my actual fort, and then build a well room above that, so I wouldn't accidentally lose all my remaining dwarves in ironic deaths, but after mining out everything I found out that I didn't have the necessary workshop stuff to build a well, so I decided to barr the door to the well room and get back to it later. It was winter and the river was frozen solid anyway.

And then I forgot all about it until I saw this:

I renamed it the Drowning Door, and it will definitely be what destroys my fort, but for now I should be all good!
