I mean finding out that Jack Dorsey loved and actively ran cover for some of the worst people on the internet because he was digging their scene is the least surprising thing in the world next to finding out that water is wet and the sun is hot.

Elton John left today, citing the air of "misinformation" on the site.

And, as is usual with any high-profile user, Elon begged them to stay.

It's a slow death, but the site is dying.

If there was something better or simple to take it's place, it may have even died before the takeover, and would have much less of a market share now. Maybe if Mastodon figured out how to let people search easily or allowed embeds as easily as Twitter does it could have done it already.

Musk's turn to right wing provocateur is going to kill Tesla. Ignore the sinking cess pool that is Hulu. He has now made buying a Tesla a political choice for many. This wasn't a problem when there was no competition, but there are tons of good choices in categories Tesla doesn't even have. Add a lack of new models and updates (how long has it been since a real S update) and terrible build quality and I think Tesla will just be some brand under GM.

What I am seeing is that activists and journalists are congregating on Mastodon, where the federation allows them to communicate one another while moderating each other's server's content. One of those interesting things is that the Holocaust Museum posted that it took them 5 years to get 50K followers on Twitter, but they got that in a month on Mastodon.

Meanwhile, celebs and some creatives are going to tumblr. Like Mark Ruffalo just put out a "going away" tweet to his 8.3 million followers and the only link he has is Tumblr.

My guess is that how did you spend your time on Twitter? Was it mostly in activism or reporting the news? Mastodon. Was it mostly shitposting and retweeting funny stuff or making memes about things? Tumblr.

It came out a few weeks ago that Automattic is looking into linking Tumblr with ActivityPub, which would instantly make it the biggest player in the fediverse. It's intriguing, but there's already an ActivityPub plugin for WordPress, and Automattic's WordPress.com will be happy to let you activate it if you bump up your membership to the $40/mo business class. That steep of an upsell pings my questioner radar like crazy.

But really, that last set of questions is the main thing that's been tripping up the Mastodon onboarding process to this point. The main thing the "join" page is asking right at the door is "What do you use social media for?", like your output as much as who you follow, so that they can kit you out with a home base that you click with while you look into the wider federated space. There are plenty of general instances, but people are saying they have a different quality of experience when they "vibe" with a more specialized one.

Automattic is the company that owns Tumblr

ActivityPub is an open standard for sharing social activity, it's how Mastodon servers connect to each other

"Fediverse" I've never heard before either but I'm assuming it's the newest slang for the social meta-network consisting of all servers that can post to each other via ActivityPub connections

The general gist of it is that if/when Tumblr gets mainstreamed into the collection of platforms that uses ActivityPub, we should be able to follow and reshare Mastodon accounts on Tumblr and vice versa, unless the mods of your instance block their traffic at the door on principle. That's an extreme move and would usually be a last resort, but it's within the realm of possibility.

While I guess (for now) Twitter isn't going to go down immediately, there's no way with the advertising crashing the way it is that he's going to be able to make that debt service payment next year.

A good point, which lead me to look up some important data: According to this article, "since 2019, 38% of Tesla buyers have identified themselves as Democrats, and 30% have said they’re Republicans." Furthermore, "New vehicle registration data from IHS Markit suggest that “blue” states - those that voted for Biden over Donald Trump - are more likely to have a higher share of EVs than “red” states. But many of those red states are very rural and have a high percentage of pickup truck registrations, and EV pickups are still virtually nonexistant. Many of the more rural blue states also have low EV adoption rates. And some of the blue states have better incentives for EV buyers, such as state tax credits or the ability to drive in car pool lanes on highways."

So effectively, Musk is effectively alienating up to forty percent of his customer base. And let's not forget: brand loyalty is extremely important for automakers. There are still people that refuse to buy American cars because of the shitboxes they made in the '70s and '80s. Teens who bought secondhand Corollas in the '90s are still buying Toyota today. As long as Musk continues his highly public and vocal rightward turn, he's going to push away both potential and existing Tesla drivers into the arms of his competitors, and most of those customers aren't going to come back even if Tesla is severed from Musk.

Just a huge, incredible self-own.

e: More data: According to this report, Tesla's market share of EV sales has dropped from 75% in Q1 of this year to 64% in Q3, with Ford, GM, and Hyundai sales rising rapidly. Tesla is still on top but is losing ground, and the absolute last thing it needs is Elon making the brand toxic to potential buyers.

This is accurate for many reasons, not just because of the musk taint. They make more profit on their cars than any other automaker, yet they keep removing parts to shave a penny here and there. First it was rain sensors, then passenger seat lumbar support, then radar, now parking sensors. They've never had that little light in your mirror that tells you when someone's in your blind spot. Teslas are expensive cars, not luxury cars. IMO the only reason they make sense when compared to the competition is their charging network, which is objectively the most reliable and matured. It's one thing they absolutely nailed. And they've announced they're going to open it up to other cars, so that one compelling reason to stay is going away.

So far the only two big drops from The Twitter Files that anyone with a brain cares about are 1) the Biden presidential campaign asked Twitter during the 2020 election to remove and suppress any photos of Hunter Biden's massive penis that people were posting Twitter because it actually constituted revenge porn, and 2) Twitter under Jack Dorsey's command had a top level "DO NOT BAN THIS PERSON UNLESS SHE ACTUALLY KILLS SOMEONE HERSELF" flag that came up any time anyone on Twitter's moderation team moved to take action against Chaya Raichik's Libs of Tik Tok account because @jack actually really liked the way she was doing poo poo like putting targets on children's hospitals and burlesque shows.

Tesla is absolutely hosed long-term. Their only advantage thus far has been EVs as status symbols, but the big boys in the auto industry are coming for Tesla in the next year or two, and it's going to be impossible for Tesla to complete directly with giants like Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, etc.

The reason why Twitter had a massive Nazi problem even before Elon took over was because Jack Dorsey kinda loved Nazis and thought it was cool that they had a space in the marketplace of ideas until the rest of Twitter's board of directors grabbed him by the balls and bulldogged him into trying to clean the place up a tiny bit, which was going moderately apace until Elon came in with his dumbfuck buyout offer and Jack grabbed the ring and yanked it because that's all he ever really out of life: a shitton of money and no responsibility.

Apple takes a 30% cut of purchases through their store (Google has a similar policy).

Previously that meant $8 * 30% = $2.40 to Apple
Now $11 * 30% = $3.30 to Apple

This actually helps Apple even more than before.
