Taking the laugh track out will destory every classic 90s sitcom. Seinfeld and Newsradio rely on the laugh track just as much as Big Bang Theory to make non-jokes sound funny. Big Bang Theory is absolutely still awful though.

Big Bang Theory is absolutely unwatchable horseshit, but here's a weird lifehack; a decade or so ago the show was on and for some reason the sound was streaming into my bluetooth. I tell you, watching that show is painful. It's so loving bad and the characters are so unlikeable and the jokes and delivery are not in any way funny. But when I was listening to it, I thought it was hilarious. It was like listening to a vaudeville thing, just a bunch of lazy and obvious setups for obvious and simple punchlines, but somehow it worked for me in an audio form. Big Bang Theory is actually really delightful to listen to, when you don't have to see them -- honestly, the characters do so little and there's so little physical comedy that BIg Bang Theory actually probably works better in an audio form anyway. They're so stiff and barely move at all. Their facial expressions seem to be tasked with carrying a lot of the weight and they're not good. Shrug. Maybe that's a weird quirk of mine, but I want to try this with other shows I have previously not really enjoyed. I don't think I could do this with Friends because that show was on all the time as I was growing up and I don't think I could detach the mannerisms and characters that I know from the voices.

Sort of continuing the train of thought from the last two posts (e: the last two above oldpainless), I've never really enjoyed watching Seinfeld...by myself. It's just not very funny, and the characters seem unnecessarily petty and cruel. But when there's someone else watching it with me? It gets to be a whole lot more funnier. So maybe a laughter is contagious sort of thing mixed with some form of the pathetic fallacy? I don't know.

I never hated Big Bang Theory, it had some amusing character moments like Penny helping Sheldon make progress in String Theory. I also like the bit towards the end where Amy and Sheldon get so distracted with a new breakthrough they nearly forget that they are literally at their own wedding.

The most irritating thing about the Thanos snap event was that, in 2018 when it happened, the world population was ~7.6 billion. Half of that is ~3.8 billion people, which is the world population around 1972. Then everyone acts like the world is sooo empty because half the world pop is gone. But I seem to recall there still being quite a few people around in the 70s. Also, it's not like he stopped our pop growth or anything. So we'd be right back where we were in ~60 years and I guarantee that no lessons would have been learned.

Hell, it's one of the most popular sitcoms of all time and so is Friends. All in the Family, Cheers, MASH, Seinfeld, Sunny in Philly, The Office, The Simpsons...I GET, even though I don't like them all. I realize that humor and comedy are subjective but a lot of times I just sit there and wonder what the gently caress it is I'm not seeing. I guess I could say the same thing for a lot of movie franchises. Fast & Furious, Rush Hour, John WIck, Scary Movie...not all comedies of course but just things where I'll never understand their popularity.

Yeah, notably some whales would not get better. They're already at crazy reduced levels and they breed super slowly. Cutting their numbers in half might just render a few of the species unsustainable immediately.

Using time travel to fix a problem is the laziest loving trope. If the material is not about time travel, leave time travel out of it. It's insulting to just "undo" poo poo with time travel; you completely give the finger to everything that came before it, and rendered everything completely inconsequential and ultimately pointless.

Tony didn't invent time travel overnight. I'd guess he'd been working on it in some form or another since he got back from Titan. Losing Peter kinda broke him. It's why when he does finally figure out WTF was going on, he immediately shows up with a shield and knows they turned Scott into a baby before Cap can say anything. He's done the math before and ran into the same issues. Granted this is pulled directly from my rear end but I wondered how he knew the stuff about baby Scott, and realized he'd been actually tackling the problem for a long time. That's how he had all the equipment ready to roll on short notice. It'd have been built over time (pardon the pun).

They literally could have just used Hela, they spent a whole movie establishing her. I thought that's what they were building up to. Also the funny thing about time travel as established in Engame is that while Back to the Future comes up, it actually works on Dragon Ball rules, where using it creates an alternate timeline while not affecting your existing one beyond what you bring with you when you come back. And it even involves collecting a set of world-altering macguffins that don't exist in the bad future. (and I'm always lol that Dragon Ball Super has a time travel arc that explicitly involves two different methods of time travel that explicitly operate by different rules. Most of the characters rapidly lose track of what is actually going on... including, it's implied, the main villain.)

I will say time travel (and parallel universes) plots have a tendency to fall into this sort of nihilistic reasoning about the pointlessness of doing anything when things can just be undone by going elsewhere or just avoiding the cause of the problem altogether. I think Endgame does a decent version of avoiding this when it comes to time travel, and Everything Everywhere All At Once does a good job at addressing this nihilism and confronting it.

Big Bang Theory is absolutely still awful though. Most "taking out the laugh track to show how unfunny something is" videos just mute the audio during the track, leaving the characters sitting in silence and creating a blatant awkward pause. Because the dialogue and acting directions were set up to accommodate the laugh track. Taking just the audio (because this would cause distracting visual cuts) and simply remove the laugh track section (splicing just the talky bits together) usually shows the dialogue moving much more smoothly. That doesn't automatically make the jokes and dialogue funny or well written, but it does demonstrate that simply silencing the laugh track does more than just focus on the writing.
