Designing weapons isn't something to look up to. The guy was probably a talented engineer, but he spent 5+ decades figuring out better ways to kill people and marketing that capability.

A senior guy who retired from my last job years ago worked at Springfield Armory in the 60s and had what he said was a prototype M7A3 grenade launcher that had been left to him by someone who retired from Springfield before he left. He brought it in once, it's a fairly simple thing that doesn't scream "weapon" unless you know what it is already.

Society is built around having better ways to kill people that hopefully never get used. It is distasteful to acknowledge this fact in our new more righteous liberal worldview. But will remain a foundational truth of civilization in perpetuity.

I think this is a bit silly/oversimplified. Are you talking about capitalist society or civilization as a whole? Even narrowing it down to just capitalism the system isn't "built around" killing people with weapons.

Edit: love Elon getting in on the lockdown/Fauci hate an entire year after America decided COVID was over or Fauci basically out of the picture once that happened. Iirc the guy is now retiring?

The state monopoly on violence isn't the same as saying society is structured around the development on ways to kill people.

I was just using it as an example that even our current exploitive, alienating society isn't necessarily "built around" the idea of figuring out how to kill people/weapons development; I'm on a phone so I'm not gonna type out a small essay on why OP's claim makes no sense in the wide array of other forms of human organization (current or historical).

Countries without armies, like Costa Rica and Ireland, essentially depend upon those hegemonic powers for defense. I'm not even going to mention unarmed micro states, because they also exist at the convenience of their neighbors.

This is a smarter way to word my stance without my shitposting edginess.

The only thing in history that has ever stopped bad societies from conquering good societies has been violence. No one can stop the US from being an absolute shitheel through most of the world because no one can out violence us. We just keep pretending that every time we defeat one that the world is butterfly's and rainbows again. We've got what I consider to be clear evidence of that right now with Ukraine and Taiwan. Its not pretty but just because we're in the information age doesn't mean we've moved past that. Its an ugly thing to acknowledge as society has done its best to teach us that we're better than that.

Nailed it, the guy was really interested in revolving mechanisms under load. It's less the excitement of weapon development than it is about the sense of history. Running into someone like this is like running into an Apollo era engineer, it's a connection to a different era and manner of working and thinking.

There's a family element for me as well, since one of my maternal uncles did the materials research for the titanium bathtub on the A-10.

Ok, I guess you're technically correct. But my point is that those societies are only able to exist at the whims of those other societies with strong militaries and a corresponding foreign policy. They're the exception that proves the rule.

Those societies are allowed to exist *at the convenience of their neighbors* which is the point. Going to do a dumb theoretical here - Lets say Brazil just decided to invade French Guiana and conquer it, and kick every resident out. International norms isn't what would actually prevent that. International norms backed up with military power would. Martial power is the most foundational thing that allows different societies and systems of governance to grow in their own free ways.

outsourcing your defense needs, or being too small and poor to bother with, aren’t good examples of societies “not predicated on martial superiority.” The former still need weapons, the weapons are just controlled by someone else; the latter can by definition only exist at the margin of global society.
