I think Elon articulating why he thinks Fauci should stand trial would be funny as hell. He’s too lazy to have absorbed all of the Q-nut rationale. He just wants to curry favor with them

He's all about kowtowing to the CCP. If they'd prefer he tries to blame the US for creating covid to help him get more Tesla shops in China, I don't see why he wouldn't do it.

"gain of function" is a relatively broad genetic research term that includes experimentation with viral transmissibility, particularly in regard to establishing how they might leap from animals to humans, that is somewhat controversial because knowing how things could spread to humans is only one step away from making them spread to humans.
the "research' by doctor fauci" is related to funds approved by the national institute of health for a lab located in china to study bat-originating diseases leaping to humans. fauci's, and the nih's, position is that the research funded by the grant did not rise to 'gain of function' levels and the viruses in this particular study are not genetically linked to covid. musk here is parroting the right-wing conspiracy theory that the nih funded gain of function research in china that resulted in the covid-19 virus being released either accidentally or intentionally. this is despite covid being genetically unrelated to the viruses being studied in the lab, despite it being part of a family of viruses that regularly make the jump from animals to humans, and despite that a pandemic like covid was foreseen for many decades and was in fact why this kind of research was being funded in several countries across the world in the first place.
it all just comes down to "they were doing virus research of bats in china because it was identified as a high-risk viral source, and one time someone said covid came from people eating bats in china, and fauci mysteriously happened to be involved in both (because it's literally his job)."

The whole reason the NIH was funding a zoonotic virology lab in China was because that was where the original SARS coronavirus made the jump from animals to humans years before.

Which means... Dr. Fauci engineered a time traveling virus and sent it into the past to cause SARS!

Elon, probably isn’t mad at Fauci about the AIDS stuff & the anti mask stuff tho, so you probably don’t gotta hand it to Elon at all here.

A lot of what Qanon idiots on the right does can probably be considered some group oppositional defiant disorder at scale. Like why get angry at masks? Because it's what those "elites" asked people to do. Same with vaccines. The reasoning ends up being post hoc because the opposition came first and reflexively, and if the "logic" is nonsense or even internally incoherent, it doesn't matter. Gotta own the libs, doesn't matter if eating horse paste means I poo poo myself in public and die of COVID while drowning in my own fluids.

well it's rigid black/white thinking. i don't know anything about psychology but i think it's like what adorno described in the authoritarian personality. he talked about a veiled resentment at the patriarch of the family which can't be expressed directly toward the overbearing father, but works itself out via some outgroup as the all-controlling force in their lives. he thought this wasn't the right in general but a particular kind of right ("pseudoconservatives") who are especially common on the american right.

quote:

For Adorno, pseudoconservatives sense a fundamental truth: employers, not elected leaders, are the authorities in charge of our everyday lives. They do not see this as a problem in and of itself, to be fixed by improving democratic structures. Instead, writes Adorno, “they want to do away with the form of democracy itself and to bring about the direct control of those whom they deem the most powerful anyway.”

Applying this conception to our time, movements of the right — from the Goldwater campaign to the Tea Party — are “rebellions” ultimately submissive to authority because their members know that private-sector employers, not the government, are the real forces in control of daily life. Their left-leaning nemeses thus appear as “usurpers” of true authority whose constraints upon rightful leadership must be abolished.

They may rail against the King, in other words, but never the Crown. Such a perspective is particularly useful to interpreting the political right in the United States, with its close relationship to capitalism.

part of his point too is that they can be rebellious (and this fascinated adorno) but they act out in a way which is paradoxically dependent on authority and traditional patterns of deference and command.

it's like the jan. 6 thing. they carried out a failed putsch believing that there was some special forces mystery men on the inside, like knights in shining armor, who would leap into action once they stomed the "castle" to restore trump's rightful "crown" to his head. it's not the "crown" itself that they were rebelling against, but an usurpation. it's rebelling in a way that's demanding the army take over, or some group of them, because that's who they identify with as the authorities.

or like the twitter thing. they're staging a rebellion of sorts that's paradoxically dependent on the company's billionaire owner -- whom they're dependent on and obsequious to -- who is crafting a narrative that they're oppressed because it's their rightful place to be popular, for everyone else to defer to them, to like/fave/retweet them. and trump's failure was because the hunter biden story was suppressed by a cabal of usurpers who had violated some naturalized and unchanging eternal thing like "free speech." or it's because they banned trump after he lost, so it's a static view of history too where the timelines get messed up and confused.

it's the result of a failed identification with the power structure, so they've rebelled and overthrown all those managers who have held them back! and it's all thanks to musk ruling through the fuhrerprinzip. but unlike a traditional conservative who would defend established structures and institutions (twitter's moderation policies), they would destroy those structures, but the end result of all of this is that they'll just destroy twitter.

that's honestly pretty wild seeing as how far right hes shifted his fan base in recent years

whether you think his takes on gender are garbage (they absolutely are) he's still one of the most experienced stage performers out there, he can manage crowds better than just about anybody. he still gets the entire room to be silent mid-boo by just saying 'hey"

but it looks like he read the room right away and knew to not outright take Elon's side, with the 'sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience' remark

then made that really light "it's the people who came here last minute who're booing" attempt to at least look like he tried to help as a show to musk he wasn't just letting him bomb it intentionally, but he knew there was no saving that one

i bet you he knew it was probably gonna happen, and tried to say it wasn't a good idea, but musk went dense and intense and it's prolly not worth pissing off a super billionaire with an army of paramilitary internet fascists as a black celebrity

but if dave chappelle can't get a crowd of his own paying fans to even give someone a shot, at the end of a set, noone can

musk is terminally unlikeable
