Sure, but you're a different kind of audience. I'm guessing that's a Patreon exclusive or something like it, and that's completely different. What I'm talking about is the general, algorithm-driven audience or even those who actually subscribe. Sure, I'd like to learn about that weird MP3 thing, but that's a freaking commitment to a video about a stupid* device. I'd imagine CRD and his team know what they want, but (comparable?) Techmoan and Technology Connections videos very rarely crack 40 minutes. Doubling that seems like an unnecessary barrier for new viewers. * presumably, because RIAA is involved. I'm watching the video now, and I don't think he could split this up. It's basically a documentary about the device. No one being served videos by the youtube algorithm is going to click a video about entering track titles into a device they've never heard of. Each part of the video needs the rest of the video to make sense.

And it’s got not one but two “oh my god Gravis that is so stupid/amazing” reveals in the last half that are worth the wait. But yeah you really couldn’t split this up, and I personally really like that YouTube means I get videos like this that are a deep dive and don’t have to worry about the length like if they were on broadcast TV or something. Nerd poo poo like this is WHY I pay way too much money for YouTube premium. e: conversely there’s a pretty good break about 45 minutes in when he switches to the second device if you want to watch more later. I like Defunctland as well - 90 minutes investigating who actually wrote the four-note musical theme Disney channel uses in their channel idents? Absolutely, even if Disney channel wasn't even available here when I was young and I have zero nostalgia around it. Ditto his deep deep dive into Fastpass (even if I've never been in the same country as a Disney park). Most of their stuff hits that sweet spot of being so incredibly niche and detailed that it's interesting even when I don't have a personal connection to the topic, really.

That was a good and compelling/informative CRD video. What a strange device that makes sense in the extremely strange context of the turn of the millennium. Working with an editor earlier in the process, I can imagine a world where that was logically broken into two or three pieces. But having an editor with an eye towards smaller chunks might fundamentally change the nature of the documentaries themselves, and I don't know if that would be a good thing  CRD (and LGR, TechMoan, DnakPods, et cetera) all have a unique, strong voice that certainly feels like it's a direct function of the small size of their production team(s).

For me a YouTube video less than 20 minutes or is 1) probably too short for me to go to the effort of changing context from "browse" to "watch" for, and 2) for technical content it's probably nowhere near detailed enough to cover the subject beyond a surface level.

I got into youtube during the old days when unlocking long videos and monetization was easy, but in-video ads didn't exist. Which meant that anybody making videos in the 5-15 minute range was doing so in order to increase ad payout. Just like the people doing "shorts" now.

With Youtube shorts, we're doing them again after stopping last year, as youtube fixed how shorts are presented to users (which caused a lot of backlash last year). A trend we've noticed with shorts is they tend to cast a much wider net and get a lot of views from people who are outside of the core audience. This is both a blessing and a curse, as new users tend to stick around and watch older content (yay!) but also leave some of the worst comments I've ever read on a public forum (I tend to do my best to prune bad comments, like people threatening to hang us for having a BLM sticker visible in older videos).

Long videos that are mostly narration (like CRD, Technology Connections, etc.) pair very well with the speed control in the Youtube player. Most people talk slowly enough that they're perfectly understandable at double speed.  Just be warned: for the first few minutes after watching something at 2x, normal-speed speech will sound so drat slow.
