Yeah at this point I guess Sony has earned some level of trust in their PC ports. If not on launch at least not to be quickly forgotten.

Sony's solution to the launch issues of Horizon: Zero Dawn's PC version was to hire and (later on) acquire Nixxes. A solid move on their part.

As I understand it, hexes instead of squares, better AI and visuals. The game mechanics are almost untouched, just balance tweaks here and there.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume the game doesn't actually use even 16GB of RAM at peak usage, but that it does sometimes and they just doubled it for the sake of recommendation because obviously you're going to need overhead for the porn tabs you've got open and it's a ^2 so it looks orderly. If the PS5 ran it fine with 16GB of RAM we'll be fine, it's a recommendation, not a requirement.

My hopes aren't high though.

Is the 32 gb of RAM some equivalent of how the CoD games hit the hundreds and hundreds of GB space and it's always said it's down to uncompressed audio?

Unused RAM is wasted RAM in my book. Windows is pretty drat good okay at handling memory, I remember when people got bitchy because Windows was using a lot of RAM at idle because of background tasks. It immediately budged out of the way when something more important started using it, but Microsoft had to hide it in Task Manager because people wouldn't shut up.

windows uses all available free memory to cache frequently accessed files

less important now with fast SSDs but it made a huge difference on HDDs

There's challenges in High on Life that appear as posts on an in-game forum you access from the menu and they're pretty funny and also explain mechanics required to do the challenges. Kind of a cool in-universe way to do that rather than just give you a checklist of things to do.

correct, if the ps5 only has 16GB of ram and it runs flawlessly on it, then it needing 32gb on pc is evidence of poor optimization

Do you feel the same way?
32GB is recommended, 16 is the listed required amount.

There's speculation this is trying to sidestep the issue of everyone having different hard drive speeds, but who knows.

It may also be asset caching/aggressive loading because the variety of storage peripherals on PC means they don't have the guaranteed SSD streaming bandwidth you have on PS5. This would especially make sense for a non-crossgen title.

But if 32 GB is only a recommendation, not a hard requirement, they should at least be able to communicate what the extra memory is expected to to be used for.

God, I suddenly had a flashback to when they were hyping up the PS5 and its ~special~ proprietary hard drives that would be able to outperform even PC's and squash the competition and probably shoot lasers and print money or some poo poo.

16 is going to be perfectly fine for the foreseeable future if the cutting edge consoles are rocking 16, since any developer planning to release a game for both will have to shoot for good performance on 16.

16GB is a fine default these days, 32GB is a stretch goal

if you're building with DDR5 you're basically forced into 32GB though because the smallest capacity fast sticks are 16GB each

Thinking back to getting incredibly hyped with my friend because he was getting a new machine with a 486 processor and 16 megs of ram, and then complying with DRM protection by reading a manual through red plastic.

I got a copy of TIE fighter off of him and the DRM for that game was they had the names of various star destroyers on each page, and they'd ask you a page number and you'd have to plug in the corresponding ISD name. I only remembered like 4 so I had to restart the game until I got one I knew.

Computers have other stuff running on them too that takes up memory, plus the PS5 can stream assets from the SSD and doesn't need to cache as aggressively. PS5s have a unified memory model so the memory usage isn't going to reflect the exactly same requirement on PC, but if a game comes anywhere close to needing 16GB of RAM, then having 32GB in your system is a reasonable recommendation.

Also related, if anyone has the option to do so, I highly recommend moving your system drive to an NVMe drive. I got a new machine back in April but I stuck with my previous M.2 drive which was SATA. I finally upgraded to an NVMe Gen 4 drive and it's probably the single biggest speed boost I've ever had in a machine since my original SSD.
