I watched No Time To Die for the first time since it's release, not bad overall but fairly flabby and the action felt very going-through-the-motions. Sure looks nice though. I think people were pretty kind to it at the time because we were all so relieved Craig didn't have to go out on Spectre.

NTTD is odd because they obviously want to tell an emotionally affecting story and then they insert these classic bond camp elements into it like the whole Spectre party and the wacky scientist guy and poo poo. It’s like halfway Brosnan and halfway Craig. I still think it was mostly good and a fitting capstone.

They should just start back like Moore or Dalton or Brosnan. Just make some references to him being an agent for a while and let it be a Bond movie again.

It doesn't have to be set in the '50s for the rest of this to apply.

Making a period piece just isn't what I'd want to see creatively, besides the fact that there's just no reason for it. It would make them look desperate when the Bond brand is still very strong.

Don't love the idea of putting Bond back into the 50s or 60s. Seems like either an excuse to turn him back into a grab-rear end or be a re-do apology for it.

The last five movies were all about a Bond who is an unhappy alcoholic government agent who hates himself and what he does. I'm ready for a change, bring back some more of the camp and humor. And I also join those who don't want or care about a reboot/origin story/explanation for how James Bond isn't dead. Just start with an awesome cold open of James Bond out on a mission being James Bond and everyone will go along with it.

Why do you have to?

In the Moonraker book, Bond doesn’t even have a romance. Gala Brand dislikes him for most of the story and slaps him and shoves him away when he tries to kiss her. They grow close through the experience of stopping Drax but it turns out she was already engaged. Bond ends the book realizing he was just overconfident and misreading the room the entire time.

You "have to" because it's unavoidable. Returning to that time period is necessarily going to come off as being corrective. "Forget what happened in those old Bond movies, here's how he really should have acted."

Going back in time also seems like an admission they were wrong in contemporary movies when arguing for Bond's relevance. The problems and villains of the modern world aren't interesting enough so let's go back to the Cold War.

Eh, it might be okay. Before the MCU, only hardcore Bond fans cared about any of this metaplot stuff, and by the time a new Bond happens, the metaplot multiversal madness will be played out :haw:

Bond will end up seeing his parents die in a mountaineering accident as often as Bruce Wayne watches his mother's pearls scatter over the sidewalk. (The accident will invariably turn out to have been set up by Blofeld.)

Reminds me, has anyone read Forever And a Day? It is Anthony Horowitz's second Bond novel and second time he's set it in the Fleming era. Which I am ok with for the books because there's unused Fleming material to build on and his style can be imitated. It can actually feel like a book written back then whereas with movies it's nearly impossible to fake being anything other than contemporary.

But it's also interesting that the book is an origin story. It basically does what Casino Royale the movie does but for the literary Fleming Bond, by starting off with his first kills to become a double-O. Which is kind of funny because chronologically it means being a prequel to Casino Royale the book.

Edit: the Bond books have been in a weird place after Benson. There was a big break and then a bunch of novelists, who are pretty big names, who did one book each before the licence moved to someone else. Only Horowitz has been given more than one but apparently he'll be done after his third.

And part of the reason I mention it is that they did an origin story before, with Carte Blanche, but it was a modern version. And promptly abandoned I guess.

I feel like they don’t. The one thing that’s always consistent about the bond movies is they always try something different. Either taking ideas and styles in that current era or just shaking it up to keep it fresh. The origin, heavy continuity was a new way to take the franchise. For the first time we had a bond who we got to see start and end.

But they usually try not to repeat themselves too much so I doubt they’ll do an origin again. They might of course, who knows but EON, but I’m gonna doubt it

The 60’s idea if they’re going with it would give the new bond a pretty unique feel compared to the last few decades. X men first class was pretty fun and used that aesthetic in a neat way. So idk I’m interested

Haven't they leaked to pretty much everywhere that they're looking for a younger Bond, specifically one somewhere between mid 20 to early 30's? Like, maybe everyone got that rumor wrong, but the more likely scenario is that they're just going for a younger Bond.

Obviously appealing to a younger audience doesn't hurt, but my guess is they mainly just want someone who won't age out of the role anytime soon. People found it charming (I think?) but Barbara Broccoli probably doesn't want another cranky mid 40s actor saying he'd rather slit his wrists than play Bond again after only four movies.

Or maybe they just don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past where Moore felt super uncomfortable with some of the female characters flirting with him.

The Tories have been bleeding out the BBC's budget for years and with the abolishment of the TV license, they might have finally dealt it the death blow. No wonder they had to team up with Disney to keep the show alive.

Also due to the huge variety of stories and sets, Doctor Who is just a super complex show to shoot and produce. Apparently one of the reasons why the early revival seasons came out as fast as they did is because RTD and Moffat are utter maniac workaholics. There's a reason why they went with Chibnall despite being clearly unsuited for the job: no one else wanted it.

Edit: Other than the somewhat anomalous case of Who, British shows are just usually shorter with more relaxed production schedules.

Also the Davies era was comfortable looking a lot cheaper than American genre shows (and was released at a time when audiences were OK with that - I'm not sure that generosity would be there now in the current climate of movie-budgeted shows). The moffat era raised the production values and started doing a lot of split seasons near the end as a result.

Don't take my original post to imply that Goldeneye wasn't top-tier. Brosnan absolutely hit it out of the park with his opener in the Bond series. And it's a shame that the majority of his films felt more like campy extensions of the Moore era films instead of maintaining or exceeding the bar that Goldeneye set.

I just think Dalton Bond navigating post-Soviet Russia would be interesting, since we've seen that version of Bond deal with the Soviet Union too.
