There's also Tempest, which I know nothing about, and I think a few defunct MMOs.

I generally trust old games to work more on GOG because that's their whole mandate, and that might be worth keeping in mind if you wanna explore older flightstick games.

Yeah, I generally use GOG for older games too. Looks like TIE Fighter is on sale over on GOG so I'll snag it right now. Thanks!

I'm looking for a game that has vertical gear progression but ideally isnt a path of exile / diablo 3 /grimdawn top down game, but more of a WoW type game. I enjoy wows vertical progression, but its not something I get the same scratch from in GW2 or FFXIV as far as other mmos go, and im not into those top down lost ark and co games I mentioned above either, anymore.

Kingdoms of Amalur is a classic single-player MMO kind of deal with hotbar abilities and character progression very similar to WoW. The story is a whole bunch of whatever but I imagine that's not what you're looking for.

We lied. We are not at war. There is no enemy. This is a rescue operation.
I've been playing a lot of Post Void and Star Wars Episode I podracer. I like the feeling of speed or flow or whatever these games give me, where if you click into a run and focus everything just happens so fast you barely have time to register it. I'm looking for more games where the feeling of speed is both the primary focus and done well mechanically (e.g. Podracer is a racing game so the speed there is built in, Post Void has incredibly forgiving enemy hitboxes so it doesn't require pinpoint accuracy when shooting.) I'm open to any genre, I honestly just wanna go fast. I was thinking Neon White, but from what I see watching playthroughs it feels more mechanically geared to a speedrunner mindset of like... micro optimizations or something and I'm not sure that's what I'm looking for exactly.

Any genre, PC preferred, extra points for small/indie titles. Thanks for any recommendations!

I would expect neon white would still hit. If you’re not going for the highest level medals the optimization comes in less, and it feels great speed wise.

You might look at Race the Sun, which is an infinite runner where you control a solar-powered glider from a Starfox-style 3D third-person perspective.

That's fair. I throw out these oddball suggestions mostly because I don't usually have anything in my own experience that's closer to what is asked for.

I will say that Race the Sun is a very nontraditional infinite runner, and it's nicely "swooshy". But if you look at the trailer and decide you don't want it, that's totally fair.

They're not necessarily MEANT to be played one handed, but both Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy are turn based, so it doesn't really matter if it's taking you a long time to do the console equivalent of hunt and peck. Of the two I'd recommend Triangle Strategy because there's about twice as much talking as combat, so you'll spend a LOT of your "gaming" time just pressing the "yes, please go on" button. I know that may not sound riveting but hey, you're gaming with one hand on a switch.

Edit: Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Dragon Quest for the same reasons - you finish all four of these and the months will be gone and your hand will be healed!

Distance is a driving game where you dodge some obstacles and have to do a bit of platforming at high speed. When you get a flow going on certain levels the game feels amazing. Can be frustrating if you keep dying though. Levels tend to be short, but there's a few "story" modes (only 1 car), a track generator, online stuff.

Maybe redout? It's like an fzero successor. I didn't like the camera angle in it but it's pretty drat fast.

Most of the things I can think of, it's the left hand that's more important, but maybe you could use an untraditional grip, especially for slower games. Crypt of the Necrodancer on PC you can play with just the right hand, but it might be more complicated on Switch. Punch Club is a slow enough game that it wouldn't matter if you were using a weird grip or switching back and forth between joycons. World of Goo uses the joycon as a pointer rather than for the control sticks.

I did find this page where somebody put together their own list. https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/mj2189/list_of_onehanded_switch_games/

If you think calling me names is gonna get a rise out me, think again. I like my life as an idiot!
Looking for thoughts on multiplayer exploration/survival games that are good for just co-op. Something fun for my wife and I to do.

We have gone back to Minecraft a few times, but that's a bit too bare bones. We've played Satisfactory a decent amount, but at this point we are just waiting for the game to be out of early access. With that game, I often focused on base building while she focused on exploration.

The exploration aspect is very important. If the game doesn't have a rewarding exploration component, then it's not that interesting.

Overall - we don't want something in early access. Early access is cool for some people, but both of us just prefer the "completed" experience.

But yeah, looking for games that can be good co-op with just the two of us. Not looking to have other players around.

The Raft? Valheim? Sea of Thieves? Pros/cons on these? Any others?

I'm also interested in something along these lines, except my friend group is looking for less tedious exploration/survival and more fun gameplay. As such, I would caution against Valheim, personally. We found it extremely grindy and the actual gameplay to be boring. My friends and I have been playing state of decay 2, which has been fun but we've played a lot so we're looking for something else. Sea of Thieves may be promising?

1) Recommendations for a open world-y co-op game? Things we're looking for:

  • Co-Op
  • Cross platform across PC and Xbox
  • Not as "grindy" as Valheim
  • Open world(ish)
  • Sense of progression
  • Can be enjoyably played in shorter chunks (like 30 minutes?)
  • The less expensive, the better

2) Recommendations for any chill-ish co-op game? Things we're looking for:

  • Co-Op
  • Cross platform across PC and Xbox
  • Can be enjoyably played in shorter chunks (like 30 minutes?)
  • The less expensive, the better
  • NOT Extreme - so no hyper twitch FPS's and such.

3) Recommendations for a city/community/base builder? Things I'm looking for:

  • Community builder that is not skylines/simcity.
  • Something with a genre gimmick? Several "builder" games I've played, like Banished, only have a couple of actual strategies to progress. Tropico series was decent. I bounced off of Rimworld.
  • Not too simple not too spreadsheet-y

I have not gamed nearly as much as I would have liked this last year! Thank you for recommendations!!!

For #3 I would recommend giving Songs of Syx a try if 1995 level graphics aren't a deal breaker. The free demo is just the full game from a couple versions ago. It's medieval/fantasy not modern but has a lot of interesting systems and scratched the SimCity itch a lot better than Rimworld and its ilk for me.

Need a game recommendation/theoretical question:

What's an highly accessible game that broadly matches Elden Ring's genre. And I mean very broadly, as in "a third person action game mostly focused on melee combat". This would encompass everything from Ocarina of Time, Arkham Asylum, Elden Ring, etc.

If someone is completely new to this, what's a game on steam that is bright, cheerful, funny, and will help ease someone into the absolute basics of "this analog stick moves your dude, this one look around with the camera, and you want to hit and not get hit" and is also very forgiving so someone can build up some fundamental familiarity with the conventions of the control scheme and basic "verbs"?

This is the kind of tjing I think games struggle with, there's a lot of assumed knowledge.

Well for the second part, games in general are kind of the textbook example of constructivist education with intrinsically compelling activities leading to an intrinsically compelling goal.

This is why children will learn and teach each other how to play remarkably complex video games (compared to traditional children’s games, which can be complex but in very different ways from video games).

So as long as there’s no motor or other physical accessibility issues, just playing a variety of games until one “clicks” is the best education in fundamental video game concepts, in my opinion. The apparent complexity of the game probably won’t be a barrier beyond the player’s attitudes about it.
