GW's white acrylics probably aren't the worst in the business but if they're not they're pretty close. If you can get your hands on either, I'd suggest any of the Vallejo white paints, or Reaper's Pure White.

That makes sense, thanks. I got a couple pots of corax in those starter kits because they had a few other colours i wanted so i figured gently caress it and used those. Thanks.

Are you doing corax white over black? That's a huge root of the problem and you're recreating Duncan Rhodes' "mistakes I made when starting out" video almost to the letter

Don't paint white with a brush, at least not GW whites. Prime white, paint the black and other details, use Apothecary White on the whites, and then do a light white highlight if you feel it's necessary. That's the most low effort way to go about it imo.

I did some really conservative dry brushing on it but it doesn't look much different. I think it'll be fine though. The sculpture I'm attaching to it really ends up being the main focal point once it's attached. Definitely happy with giving that moss some extra depth though. This is gonna look rad as hell when you've got the whole thing mounted. My Spirit Otter posted:They werent originally going to be white scars when i primed them and black was also the only colour i had. But i appreciate the advice and will watch this vidya The secret to white is never to paint white. Like, avoid it if you can, but the only time you should be breaking out a true 100% white is to do your final highlights over some other off-white that comprises the majority of your surface. You can prime black, but for the next one, after you're primed slather the whole thing with a medium to light grey. If you're brushing by hand, you're gonna have to do a lot of really thin coats to avoid the chalky look, and starting as light as possible for your base coat will help make that easier. White has crappy coverage like yellow, so you want something that's got comparatively dense pigment, which you can get from off-whites, or in a pinch blending some denser colors into your white. Going back and adding darker details once you've got your white down is way simpler than going the other way around. The extra secret to white is to start spraying things, either with white primer or an airbrush, 'cause to hell with hand-painting that crap.

Thanks for the tips and kind words. I absolutely have the bug. Tbh I have been in a creative rut for a while and making little miniatures really hit the spot. Under normal circumstances I'd just be like "hey really like how this came out" but I went down a rabbit hole of all of the stuff people have posted itt after posting in it last night and was just like "holy poo poo" at some of the paint jobs you guys do. Very happy with what I was able to pull off, but just realizing theres tons of stuff to learn about it after looking at the wild level of detail people are able to get on 1 inch tall figures. veni veni veni fucked around with this message at 09:28 on Dec 18, 2022 |

here is my Imperial Navy Breacher Kill team! I added a mohawk to the Hatchcutter, and added custom heads to half of the team to make them look more like unique characters! the captain is a pirate captain with eyepatch and parrot, a cool lady with aviators is the sensor, a cool black cowboy is the gunner, a psycho friday the 13th lady is the AxeJack, and the other tech guy is a beanie wearing engineer who doesnt shave. The rest are normal because I really like the breacher helmets!

Hello here I am again with my amateur nonsense, but boy am I enjoying it. This guy! Crown. Gold paint looks rubbish. How to get a half-decent gold-looking finish? Please bear in mind I am fairly blind and my hands shake so anything *too* delicate is gonna be problems. I have a lot of paints and some contrast paint and whatnot but nothing I have in gold looks like anything. How would you folks go about it? Or should I just *not* do gold, because let's be honest he could be wearing a paper crown and be just as fabulous. Please excuse there are a couple fibres stuck to it. I only see them in the photos, lmao

If you basecoat brown before doing the gold it can help a little, but part from that (which full disclosure I almost never remember to do), I just use a "retributor armour" from GW (not a particular recommendation btw, its just a decently covering gold paint I happen to have*), then use a flesh tone wash (GWs reichland fleshshade works fine, but any flesh wash will do) then touch up the gold and do final highlights with bright silver. The flesh wash has a slight reddish tone that helps the gold read as gold for some reason, and the silver reads well as highlights from shiny gold. *Some gold paints cover like rear end, and all you can do is shake them like crazy and do a couple of coats

On the topic of white, a WIP: Couple of weeks back I found an Intercessor so I decided I'd practice painting white: Undercoated the white with AP Bleached Bone, then glazed over that with VGC Skull White, then realized I need to shade so added some AP Strong Tone, then touched up the slop, and finished by drybrushing Skull White to cover up the brushwork and make sure I caught all the raised bits. The rest is AP Crystal Blue, and went with AP Pure Red for the trim, with the world's lowest-effort highlight of a Bleached Bone drybrush. Novamarines third company I guess? Not a fan of these moulded bases with all kinds of crap on them. Can't just go all green with them. Siivola fucked around with this message at 19:14 on Dec 18, 2022 |

Not done, but I think I have the major colors blocked in... Feeling like I could be ambitious and do some gold freehand on the hat and try to put some gold on the corset following the shapes?, maybe silver on the leather bolts, not feeling the black framing of the corset so maybe a blue/grey... Not bad so far for a first time bust. I am struggling hard on getting the right color for these leather parts.
