That sucks. We had that happen on Sheppey in summer (fortunately just before or after the heatwave iirc) and SE water were utterly useless there too. First distribution points were at really stupid areas, then they said that live stock wasn't a priority when we (and every other farmer and equestrian on the island) asked about bowser deliveries for our animals.

This is a radical idea, but hear me out: maybe GoT (or the world it's set in) is also misogynistic, and if the choice of scene to be re-enacted for MM fanfic is one of the overtly sexist ones then that is quite telling?

That relies on the press spinning it as "we did what we could" and not "unlike u socialists we excel in a fast paced business oriented free market environment *fucks up basic tender specification checks on a documentary credit and loses millions that just happens to land in the lap of a friend* oops oh well!"

Of course the press will do exactly that so sure why not. Cunts.

Torygraph article (archived copy so not a direct link) on young men checking out of work-seeking.
Pretty fair article, no mention of shirkers or snowflakes (except to say they're not!) or avocado toast.

quote:

How young men are turning their backs on work
For the first time ever this year, the share of workless men not in education is higher than for women

Much has been made about the number of older workers taking early retirement or being too sick to work.
But the biggest rise in inactivity since the pandemic due to illness has not been among 50 to 64 year-olds, but those aged between 18 and 24.
The number of young people who have given up looking for work altogether has been climbing steadily for decades. And it's young men who are increasingly turning their backs on work.

....

Kirstie Donnelly, chief executive of the City & Guilds, says that the perception that these people are part of a work-shy "snowflake generation" are unfounded.

When did the heavily-banded minimum wage come in? I do remember getting paid a pittance at Tesco as a 16 year-old (£3.19/hour in the early 2000s) but I thought that once you were 18 at that time, you got the full whack.

Now it's under 18 (and apprentices), 18-20, 21-22, 23 and over. Seems like real bullshit to me.

Oh hey, so back at 2am the DWP decided to put the money in my account I should have been getting over the last year. It's a LOT more than I was expecting, so I've spent the last almost 3 hours outside of banking hours trying to put it into another account so that it doesn't gently caress me for tax purposes (I'm self employed).

Merry Xmas! It's staying in savings until I can be sure they're not going to double gently caress me by asking for it back or saying they made a mistake or something.

Nice! Make sure the savings account actually pays interest and is not some awful "call it savings but only pay 0.1%" thing. You can get 2-3% at the moment I think.

Apologies for source. Think I missed this a few days a go, this is big news right?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/12/17/first-time-drug-users-will-not-prosecuted-police-chiefs-plan/

quote:

First-time users of cocaine and cannabis will avoid prosecution under a national blueprint being drawn up by police chiefs to treat it as a public health problem.

People caught in possession of illegal drugs, including class A and B, for the first time would no longer be prosecuted but instead would be offered the chance to undergo education or treatment programmes.

Police would take no further action if they agreed and the drug user would avoid a criminal record under the proposals being drawn up by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and College of Policing.

The individual could, however, be prosecuted if they failed to undergo education or treatment and were caught with drugs again.

Fourteen of the 43 police forces in England and Wales including West Midlands, Thames Valley and Durham, rated one of the most successful in Britain already operate similar schemes but the new initiative aims to establish a nationally consistent approach.

The move could put police and public health chiefs on a collision course with the Government which has proposed a tough new “three strikes and out” approach to recreational drug use that could see users banned from foreign travel, disqualified from driving or electronically drug tagged to stop their habit.

Still a bandage over the gaping wound of prohibition being a losing battle, but interesting that even the police seem tired of culture war poo poo

edit: possibly swap "tired of" with "underfunded for"

There was something I was listening to a while back that was saying the stuff economists use to calculate inflation is all insane stuff largely unrelated to the actual cost of living (think it was a trashfuture interview with this guy) - it doesn't take into account the cost of food or bills for example, and charts the cost of mortgages but not rent. So you can have a situation where inflation is supposedly at 10%, but the cost of basic foods, rent and energy bills have doubled or trebled in some cases.

I think the interview in question the guy was saying he was talking to his superiors and economics professors about how bad the economy is because of how the people he grew up with were suffering, and these economists were saying "what do you mean, the economy is doing great" while wearing robes and sat in a wood panelled room in Oxford.
