Polar vortex is an ever present feature of our atmosphere (strongest in winter, weakest in summer). Its position migrates throughout the year. It is encircled by the polar jet, which can be very circular (laminar flow) or very wavy, the later being when you see strong meridional transport of heat and moisture.

From my weather station . Zoomed in a bit... Edit: My heat pump hasn't cycled off for 2 hours and the backup is kicking in to keep up. My poor electric bill. stevewm has issued a correction as of 05:13 on Dec 23, 2022 |

RC Cola posted:My sister in law got stuck driving from Copper Mountain to Denver International Airport last night. It took her 7 hours to do a normal 2-3 hour drive. Apparently she got lucky because it got worse. She was stuck on i-70 just past silverthorn until the tunnel for 4.5 of those hours. Just multiple cars dead in the middle of the road with whiteout conditions. Amazing. god drat. i drove north i25 and in denver it wasnt plowed which sucked, then north of denver it was but the snow was so dry every time someone was close they kicked up a cloud that meant i couldnt see more than 10ft in front. your sister in law is a tank to be able to still function after that experience.
