It is literally freezing cold outside but the roads are still open and moving at posted limits. last year caught us slipping and we will never let it happen again. One bad experience with cold and we can handle it from then on out. Northern cities BTFO by Houston yet again

Wish we could learn that lesson in atlanta. All we can manage to learn is how to point fingers after poo poo falls apart and how to get defensive when other cities point out how poo poo we are

I was thinking about this all week and telling people not to travel on one of the the busiest travel days of the year, particularly driving to shop during the shopping days the consumer economy relies on, was just not going to happen.

I mean, they’re already travelling during a covid wave. Whatever it would take to break this pattern of behaviour has not happened yet, and all state and media effort is going into reinforcing it anyways.

Power's been out since 10am, house is at 55 now. At least the roads are clear so we can go somewhere if power isn't restored by sundown.

It's a long shot but you could check if your local Walmart still has any of these propane heaters in stock.

People are horrible at assessing personal risk, coupled with an extreme desire to do what they want regardless of external circumstances (worse in America) leads to poo poo like this. Completely preventable.

How much momentum do you think a loaded semi has? Then what happens when people are driving too fast, too close together, on slick roads, then one car hits a chunk of snow and spins out? No one can stop. If the visibility is low, the cars just keep coming. Here's one from last winter (I believe). If you're ever in this situation, I would probably move 90° to the freeway and get as far as I could (hundreds of yards at least).

Anything that would cause traffic to slow down on a normal clear day like an accident, stall or something to stare at except the road is iced over and visibility is low

So cars driving full interstate speed just keep plowing into a giant accident that comes out of nowhere that they can't stop for

People don't have the instinct to rapidly dismount, place pyrotechnics and break for the treelike to get behind thick trees, so a lot of people unfortunately get clobbered milling about. It makes a bad situation worse and it sucks to see in these videos.

The guys in the I94 video knew what the score was, in the 1 minute mark they're screaming at people to get out of their vehicles.

$140 CAD and it could save your life. You can also get smoke pots, star shells and placed or hand flares. Way better than the small, cheap ones often sold as road flares. Any pyrotechnic is better than lights or reflectors though.
