Is there anything similar to the old Romance of the Three Kingdoms games which a) isn't sixty bucks on sale (thanks, Tecmo Koei), and b) focuses on strategy over combat/army stuff? I've heard a lot of people recommend Paradox games as a replacement, and I do love their schtick, but EU/CK/Imperator just doesn't scratch the same itch for me.

Honest question: Why have AO games visible at all? Which games have you played and would recommend fell under that category, which aren't just porn? I really feel the Steam guys have hit the nail on the head on that divide, between what gamers and society consider appropriate vs just base titillation.

Maybe it's to deal with people mis-tagging games. There have been several times when I see a game I will like, so I will search for it on steam and it showed up as hidden from discovery because someone tagged it as Anime.

It's one of those games you have to play at a fairly high difficulty and for awhile to get the most out of what it's doing. If nobody ever dies and you don't go pretty deep into multiple campaigns you'll only get a taste rather than the full dynamic narrative experience.

It's really quite lovely.

The combat is very simple turn-based, grid-based stuff but there's some fun to be had with character abilities and the magic system. The main draw is how the stories unfold. Your characters undergo experiences that change them, shift in their relationships to each other and grow old as you play. Eventually their kids might join the adventuring party.

If it sounds even slightly fun to you, I'd say give it a try. You'll know within the 2 hours whether you like the writing style or not.

e: above poster is right - play on a difficulty that means you lose people sometimes.

Three Kingdoms: The Last Warlord is probably what you want.

I found it a bit boring but then I also thought the same about ROTK so YMMV; and it's only like 3 dollars on sale right now.

Just a game of endless lists screens. Have "fun" assigning and reassigning tasks while looking through endless number and character lists and menus within menus. Don't know why anyone would wanna play such a convoluted game when there's much more straight forward strategy games.

I think those two just about say it all really. It's basically a native Chinese ripoff of the older ROTK games, with some minor jank and a few extra features. Comes with somewhat rough but official English localisation.

Finished burning through Titan Quest on Normal. I think somebody was complaining recently about Ragnarok being a decent expansion but really loving with the pacing and I'd say that even applies to Immortal Throne to some degree too. Also Ragnarok's designers had no clue what they were doing w/r/t not putting things in front of the camera, goddamn.

I entertained the notion of continuing through on Epic but ehhhh. Game is just not that fun or interesting enough to justify another playthrough, let alone two more. Probably doesn't help that I picked an arguably boring build (which somehow always seems to happen) and I kinda messed up my stat assignment too. But I dunno, never really liked the whole Diablo "now do it again, but harder, we promise to drop mildly better gear this time" loop stuff.

I think I'm a bit more equipped to grok Grim Dawn now, so that's nice. But I don't think I actually want to jump right into that right away either. Need a big ole break from loot games.

Edit: Also I guess this explains why there's a ton of overlapping/combined more mobs, more XP, better loot, more loot, better crafting, etc. etc. mods.

I really want to like Titan Quest and I have played through it probably four times since it came out, the environment and areas and enemies are all phenomenal, but yeah - every single build in the game is incredibly un-fun, they are all so ridiculously boring and most of them rely on just using a skill that modifies the basic attack. Like I don't know if it's still this way but Ternion Staff used to be the #1 most powerful build in the game by an enormous margin and all it does is make your basic attack with a staff shoot multiple projectiles. The pacing is glacial and you spend the entire time basic attacking enemies with a slight tweak to your basic attack.

Unfortunately Grim Dawn feels the same to me. I've attempted to play through it a few times but all the builds and skills just feel so boring, tiny, and wimpy. The loot is extremely hard to parse and has a hugely inflated list of possible mods, most of which are not even remotely useful for your build - there are literally like 9 different "elemental" damage types and each one has its own resistances and damage modifiers and you will want at most one of those nine in your build. But even in later difficulties with completed builds it feels like you're running around playing early-game Diablo, just like in TQ :smith:

For some reason I still occasionally get the itch go go try it again but I'm always disappointed.

Total War: 3 Kingdoms has a fantastic campaign layer, and you can auto resolve the actual battles.
In terms of similar gameplay to RotK the series, you might try Chaos Galaxy 2 or whatever the best recent Gundam One Year War game is

Yeah it's also the reason I bounced off Grim Dawn to begin with. Then it turned out I was doing it "wrong" and instead of relying on an auto-attack modifier I should've grabbed a spammable active skill that basically accomplishes the same thing and use that for the entire span of the game instead... Also the map and art design in GD is also just kinda...not anywhere near as good as TQ's.

Tellingly, literally any time you see a streamer or Youtuber or whoever play Grim Dawn they will universally have a mod installed that color codes loot properly so you actually have a chance in hell of parsing it all.

Most menus have a search bar so you can filter for specific keywords on items and while it's well implemented, it also kinda speaks to a problem...

Grim Dawn also has a bit of a problem with how it tells the game's story and the pacing in general - I've never played an ARPG where I was surprised that the boss I just killed was the final boss of the game, but the base game, Ashes of Malmouth, and Forgotten Gods expansions all had endings that felt that way. I'd gotten an hour or so into Ashes of Malmouth before even realizing I was in the expansion because the climax of the base game fizzled and the new areas looked the same as the old ones.

Part of that is that there's just not a lot of buildup or fanfare, but the bigger thing for me was that by the time I reached those bosses I felt like I'd only just scratched the surface of the game. I'm sure it's intended to move into elite/ultimate but I don't think it does as good of a job as other similar games at incentivizing loop 2+.

Just Cause 2, 3 and 4. I still think #2 was the best, but if you want to play with the grappling hook and don't care for mods, #4 has a lot of options.
Gotham Knights. I have only played 4 hours today, but got pleasantly surprised it. I'm not sure what I expected, but it was definitely not this, which is really great. The older Batman games might also fit in here?
LEGO City Undercover. LEGO's take on GTA, and one of the better ELGO games.
I remember liking the Middle-earth games but never finished either of them, I'll definitely put them back on the list. Just Cause is a good shout too, I played JC3 and had a lot of fun and completely forgot JC4 even came out.
