Ontario had open communal violence until the 1920s and the Orange Order controlled Provincial and municipal politics until the 60’s. Lol literally every small town in Ontario has the old Anglican, Presbyterian and Catholic churches on opposite ends of the original town, and there are several places where there is no Catholic church for a hundred kilometres or more, with streets named after the Boyne, William and Londonderry. This is what happens when history starts in 1991. It’s loving hilarious to paint Quebec as the bad guys here.

Slim Jim Pickens posted:Waterloo is one of those battle that hangs on in Anglo historiography because it flatters their detestable nation. It's all the more insulting that it was a mostly irrelevant engagement, which is true of many other beloved Anglo stories like Agincourt or the Spanish Armada. Admittedly if you give Napoleon an opening he would take it, and if he had won at Waterloo (defeat the British then wheel to face the Prussians), it may have actually given him more breathing room to stablize the situation in France. That said, France at that point had been exhausted by years of warfare and it was unlikely Napoleon could have returned the status quo. The British are patting them their selves on the back for "ending that detestable Corsican." Also, in all honesty, the changes that Napoleon across Europe were positive and moved up trends (like a united Italy and a united Germany not dominated by Prussia) that would take decades if not another century to work their ways out. ------ Honestly, I think most of what is being posted about Galicia and Austria-Hungary is fine, it very much was an imagined nation and more or less the discussion follows the general historiography. Admittedly, I think the issue isn't Galicia's history or it is some "cursed land" but really it just didn't have a history really in common with much of the rest of present-day Ukraine. Yeah, Napoleon wasn't going to be marching across Europe again, even if he has won at Waterloo, there just wasn't the reserves. Britain just didn't want a relatively strong France contesting their interests (does this sound familiar?)

gradenko_2000 posted:thinking of becoming a "Russia was actually the one that won the war in Europe, not the Anglos" guy, but for the Napoleonic era I mean you wouldn't technically be wrong. It's a lot more complex than that, but Russia certainly contributed the greatest amount to militarily defeating Napoleon on land. The greatest contribution the British made was financial, undermining the Continental System that Napoleon constructed to exclude Britain from trade, smuggling goods and weapons to where they needed to be, and essentially turning their entire nation into a giant bank with the Royal Navy to back it up and keep the French at port.

The British are patting them their selves on the back for "ending that detestable Corsican." This poo poo is exactly what I mean. It's not enough to say that Anglos saved the day at Waterloo, they somehow get to be the only ones fighting Napoleon. Notice how there are 500,000 Germans and Austrians hanging around, and 160,000 Russians marching along? This isn't counting a bunch of reserve armies either. It is completely absurd to imagine that Waterloo made the difference here. Everybody in Wellington's army could have shot themselves and Napoleon would still have had a war to lose. Leipzig and the campaign of 1813-1814 exists completely outside of the Anglo's mind, despite it being monumentally larger and more decisive. If you follow through on the hypothetical where the Brits just disappeared at Waterloo, the follow-through would look a lot like the 1814 invasion of France.

To me its just mind boggling when people say to me, america doesnt make anything (or only makes "niche" goods). when ive literally worked in factories for things ranging from bottle caps to washing machines, and went to school with people making eye contacts or headlight assemblies for your car Some stuff just isn't worth offshoring or importing. Like toilet paper. Too cheap / bulky to make it worthwhile to manufacture overseas, mostly. Anything complex like say, LCD TVs, computers, iThings or a giant assault hovercraft that would fit in Metal Gear, absolutely worth offshoring.
