I kinda doubt anything for the twitter application was hosted on-site. It was probably some internal tooling server. "Wow look how robust twitter is! It still works even when our front-end build pipeline is unreachable!!"

Whatever you're logged into is fine, because main site is sorta okay but Tweetdeck is just an instant no for me.

Nah, people were right that it's a matter of when, not if, but a website can chug on for a while before having actual failures even when everyone who is able or willing or allowed to fix them has been fired. Look at SA.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.

Can you explain this for the rest of us? I get there are errors happening, but do they represent anything specific?

Yeah, pretty much every time a QCS thread comes up about 'what the gently caress are you even doing' there's a new collection of horror stories about the backend

And SA actually manages to get people to volunteer to work on it. Twitter's probably got most of its actual skilled staff unwilling to come back for any amount of money right now.

The 503 stuff mostly kind of "we kept trying but there was nothing there"

Then you have uncaught in promise api error which is mostly "so there's something you're supposed to get here. But there's an error. Oh and we can't find any code that's supposed to kick in and catch the error or deal with it. Uh oh"

Disclaimer: I'm baby's first frontend so if anyone disputes my error explanation, even just with word salad, their information is more correct than mine

I remember ZenDeathRobot used to tell us based on what he knew from looking at SA's code that the thing was basically on the edge of falling apart by the time Lowtax was forced out the door and he could only just keep it limping along as best he could, but the coding wounds it had incurred over the years were basically terminal unless someone with actual high-level coding experience was brought in to save it.

When SA used to dip and blip without warning back in like 2018 and 2019, ZDR would sometimes post in the mod Discord "This could be it. I'll keep you posted." It trained me to keep all my LP stuff meticulously backed up just in case SA went down one day and never came back.

I always wondered exactly how much SA could have diverged from vBulletin given that it's still just forum software but I just checked and vB3 came out in 2004, with SA being based on vB2.

Thinking back to the internet of 2004, it's kinda wild to think that SA far outlasted vBulletin's relevance.

A 503 is "internal server error", it generally means something like the server process crashing/throwing an exception/not running. (Also looks like something blocked attempts to report the error to the server on Chrome side, which could be an extension or some sort of security or permissions check, a little hard to say).

500 is an internal server error, 503 is Forbidden. Now, there’s nothing stopping the server from returning an incorrect error code, but I’m guessing the 503s have something to do with authentication problems, given the login issues people have been reporting.

EDIT: As has been pointed out, I was thinking of 403!

We are both kinda wrong.

503 Service Unavailable
(https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Status/503)

(Forbidden is 403)

... So probably whatever service is handling the APIs the desktop version uses could not talk to whatever handles actual login, though I am probably making unwarranted assumptions about their architecture.

Die Rettung fuer die Landwirte:
403 is forbidden. 503 is Service Unavailable.

Generally: 4XX it's your fault, 5XX it's the server's fault.

503 would customarily be something like "The service exists but can't service requests right now", but nothing is forcing a service to be very specific or even truthful. All it says is that there's a server side problem and the code has some handling for that error and isn't straight up crashing, probably.

Also worth pointing out that servers routinely report as little information as possible or even outright lie when an error occurs, to remove opportunities for attackers to deduce stuff about their inner workings (exactly what we’re trying to do here, really)

There is basically no form of social media that isn't full of pedophiles.

Morroque

I think the comparisons are unfair. Mastodon isn't a social media platform unto itself, but instead an implementation of a network API. Such is also the case with the larger internet. Websites with child porn on them statistically exist, but it is within every other website's rights to simply deign not to acknowledge them. That article expects the Fediverse to function differently, when that's not really possible for anyone. If the API is publicly known, and a child porn distributor chooses to make use of that public information, "hiding" that API connection in other areas really is the only available response.

The parts of the article going into the social dynamics of why the sudden influx of digital contrabanding happened was interesting enough, but it shouldn't be Mastodon's problem. It's like saying WordPress-dot-com should be responsible when some darkweb host installs a WordPress locally to liveblog all the crimes they're committing.
