more of a songwriting thing i guess but, i have a really hard time coming up with my own rhythms for melodies, that sound "right" but don't result in my just accidentally transcribing songs i'm thinking of in my head.

It's gonna sound off until you've gotten used to the song, at which point it becomes the way it sounds. Make a few changes to whatever you're stealing and then just keep it up.

Comedy option is getting some coloured dice and assigning a note length to the number of eyes and ordering based on colour. You're gonna have to add some breaks if you don't want extreme prog though.

do those little springs around the stratocaster saddle intonation screws matter? I noticed a couple are loose on saddles intonated closer to the neck

darkwasthenight

GENE TRAITOR
They're just there to keep tension on the saddles so not if they're staying in place as is.

Sometimes you'll find the low E and A springs have been cut shorter so they don't compress as much - if you've ever taken saddles off or unscrewed the intonation screws to clean the bridge or something then just check they all went back in the same position and you aren't using longer ones in a short position, or vice versa.

Firefly Jazzmaster Baritones are up

https://guitarsgarden.com/collections/baritone-guitars

$169.91 plus shipping($27), sunburst 22 & 24 fret, white in 22 fret only but it has a maple fretboard and block inlays. So, yeah, under $200 delivered for a 30" scale, two humbucker baritone. The equivalent Harley Benton is $177, but with ~$75 shipping and an 8-10 week wait right now. Not to mention their wonky JM shape.

Can anyone identify this thing for me? Came up on FB marketplace and the dude isn't responding to questions and I can't find another Fender tele that matches this exact aesthetic that isn't like 5x the price.

A boombox is not a toy!

I just got my 335 and I'm already thinking about my next guitar. Warmoth has these tele/strat hybrids which looks like you can pair an incredibly light chambered body (< 3lbs), get some nice forearm/belly contours, and slap a tele bridge plate on. It's just a quick mockup, but I'm already in love:

If nothing else I'm guessing the gold hardware is all aftermarket. I but that nut was just cut terribly or possibly cut for a different guitar altogether.

The double string guides say Chinese, as does the lack of the walnut or plastic reinforcement around the truss rod hole. Same with the bridge, never seen an American Fender that used the 3 screw Tele bridge

Same yeah. I built a partscaster that looked exactly like this one but I'm poo poo at partscasting so I was hoping this would fill that void.

I don't think I would buy that guitar at that price even if it was really an American-made Fender.

Legit Fenders (and most other major brands) have serial numbers on the back of the headstock that can be used to identify where it was made (USA, Mexico, Indonesia, China, etc.) and in what year. Getting that info would help guide a search on Reverb for similar guitars to help determine what's been changed from the factory.

I think it's also a good general rule never to buy a used guitar that you can't look down the neck from the headstock. I've seen an Epiphone that seemed fine except the whole fretboard had a tilt to one side, somehow.

EDIT: i think I picked up the importance of looking down the neck from a Dan Erlewine book or video.

Third time is a charm right?
Easiest solution is to look up the serial if they supply it. You can fake the decal but the serial will show the model, year, etc. If it's fake it won't pull up.

It's a pretty guitar but yes, it's worth being skeptical.

Also is it a top loaded bridge vs string through?

If you don't have them already, the boring-but-useful answer would be a neck cradle and mat for working on guitars. Could get them from either Music Nomad or Jim Dunlop for under $50 together on Amazon. IMO, they are a significant quality of life upgrade over using rolled up towels or whatever when you need to change strings.

For something fun that isn't a distortion pedal, you could look into one of the digital modulation multi-effects in a mini pedal. If you aren't broadly familiar with modulation effects those could be a good way to try a bunch of sounds. I have one from Flamma that seemed fine when I was playing through it.

I would have said get a Mooer e-lady flanger, but those are $70 now because they got popular.

Klon is pretty popular because it does a few things different than the pedal designs from the 70s and 80s. You don't necessarily need those things for your playing style, but you might like to try one to see.

IMO:

It works well as a boost because it adds some emphasis to the upper-mid frequency range for guitar, and some people swear by the frequency shaping in the Klon as a clean boost specifically. The TS/SD-1 also have an upper-mid emphasis in frequency shaping but are slightly different in where the frequency peak is.

It is easier to tame or avoid the "fizziness" with a Klon that otherwise shows up easily in the TS/SD-1 as the signal gets dirtier/more clipped by gain. This is more noticeable playing a guitar alone and comparing the pedals side by side, so it will sound "better" in that narrow comparison.

Its clipping can get aggressive quickly like a distortion, but the gain stage design is also fairly unique. It has parallel paths in the circuit topology allows some clean signal from the guitar to pass through and get mixed with the clipped signal after the gain stage. The combination makes it react more obviously to differences in loudness of the source signal from the guitar (aka dynamics) while keeping some note clarity. This is why Klons are associated with buzzwords like "touch sensitive" and "transparent".

The specific complain I've heard people have with a Klon is that it can lead to a tone with a lot of upper-mid "honk" in it as the gain increases. This seems likely to happen as you dial back on treble to compensate for the higher gain.

The only time that a Klon really starts to overlap with the characteristics of a Rat is you turn a Klon's gain way up. I don't think the Klon can replace what is good about a Rat.

Baron von Eevl

They're very different animals. I think the klon's clean blend is only when the gain knob is below noon, I think after that it's 100% clipping signal and just changing how much gain it feeds into that circuit.

Anyway run a rat into a klon or something, that'd probably sound good.

Yeah the Mosky golden horse was the one I used to have. I like really bright upper midrange-y guitar sounds which is def what a klon is good at. Like a klon and my pedal that's a vox ac30 drive sound are in similar ballpark of each other. And yes the touch sensitivity/picking dynamics are great. If you have a humbucker guitar that is just slightly too dark/muddy sounding with your setup try a klon

NEED SQUAT FORM HELP
20 years ago I bought a second hand Washburn MG-74 to learn how to play then promptly didn't. This christmas I got one of my kids a Thomann 1/2 sized acoustic and bought myself an Eastcoast acoustic at the same time so we can learn to play together, and now I've trying to sort out my Washburn. I've given it a new set of strings as the ones on it were 20+ years old. The volume knob and 5 way switch were both crackly so I squirted some Super 10 in them and they're sorted. Now I need some help with the Tone control. It's a standard dial pot, but it pulls out to a second position and spins nicely so all good there. However, it doesn't seem to work as a range of tonal changes. With it set to 0, the tone is very muffled and muddy. I turn it only to 1 and it's clear and ringing, but past 1 it doesn't change at all. It's the same in all 5 switch positions, and in both Tone positions. Is this normal for a tone control like this?

Tone pot is bottom left, volume pot mid right.

Gratuitous guitar shot.
