It seems the mix of kratom, benzos, and whatever the gently caress Russian coma drug (the doctor just said "don't worry about it") was off.

We must try again to purge the Dragons of Chaos from the sphere of my mind. I haven't made my bed in days. This is falling apart.

The Chaos Demons (different from the Dragons) may have infected my daughter, as she will no longer make my bed.

The bed is unmade.

The bed remains unmade.

Anyway, Twitter still works, so I can still help others.

How could someone let their daughter date someone as absolutely horrible as Tate? Yes, she's an adult and can make her own decisions. But I'd be terrified that someone would be raping my own daughter and physically coercing her into awful things. I don't know what I'd do.

Ugh.

My mother in law is a lovely, caring woman. But she is very conservative, and the internet is making her lose her mind.

At a family dinner a couple of weeks back, she was ranting about a plan by "the elites" to force everyone into "prisons" where every city in the world will be sectioned down into zones, and everyone will be forced into a specific zone, and nobody will be allowed to leave their zone except "the elites", and this is a plan to "enslave humanity" and "break our spirits". She said "they aren't even hiding it, it's in public, they put it on the internet". I responded as I always do to stuff like this, by just staring into the middle distance and ignoring her until the conversation moved on.

It is weirdly cathartic yet upsetting to find the cause of this particular brain poisoning - A recommendation by the UN that cities be organized in such a way that most people have all their daily necessities within walking distance of their home.

It is loving rad that such a innocuous and obviously beneficial recommendation on something as banal as urban planning has metamorphed into brain poison in my MIL's mind thanks to the internet.

This specific brand of brainworm, stemming from Agenda 21, goes back a decade or so (though similar ideas probably go back to the '80s, I guess), and it's based on bad-faith, cherry-picked readings of non-enforceable ideas put forward during a UN conference to help with climate change, poverty, pollution, birth control, disease, worker's rights, and other issues that affect large (often developing) populations and nations. David Icke and Glenn Beck were the big names to latch onto Agenda 21, though Alex Jones and every other two-bit conspiracist saw the fear value in grabbing random sentences out of the document. If you type "Agenda 21" into Amazon, you'll find dozens of books about it, including Glenn Beck's "best seller."

https://bigthink.com/health/agenda-21-a-wild-conspiracy-theory-reignited-by-coronavirus/

Towards the bottom of the page, this article links to the full Agenda 21 document, where you can read about such horrors as "protecting vulnerable groups," and trying to figure out how to increase crop yields WITH GMOS!!!!! Just read any part of the table of contents, lol.

quote:

"Strengthening the role of workers and their trade unions," " Combating deforestation," "Promoting sustainable human settlement development."
What do you notice? It's the same poo poo Jorp is going nuts over: the idea that the free market shouldn't get to decide how hosed up the planet and population becomes. Rightwing grifters went apeshit over this document, painting it BIG BROTHER 1984 and how whole populations were going to be herded into FEMA refugee camps. The idea of making birth control easily accessible to populations, especially in developing nations, made them go full pearl-clutching towards "ethnic cleansing" fantasies.

From what I understand, conspiracists see Agenda 21 as the father to the "Great Reset" paranoia that came up early in the pandemic, with the Great Reset literally just being a similar list of ideas about how corporations could start changing certain actions and behaviors that impact the climate and other areas, utilizing the global halt during the first year of the pandemic to "reset" bad economic and environmental habits that grew pre-pandemic. Just like the spooky label of "Agenda 21" making idiots think they were living in a thriller novel, grifters and Qultists saw the word "reset" and immediately jumped to conclusions that nearly matched their invented outcomes about Agenda 21's ideas. There's just so much overlap because grifters just rehash the few ideas over and over because they're proven to sell books, get people coming to lectures, and watching videos.

Basically, because a grifter is trying to sell a product, and "doing your own research" involves not actually reading something or at least using basic surface-level comprehension skills, people looking to be scared by their own shadows have made an industry out a couple of documents that can be summarized as: "maybe corporations shouldn't be given so much freedom to pollute, and maybe all human life has value, and maybe the government should help people more than corporations."

lmao digging into those tweets is like conspiracy telephone. electric cars are bad in winter weather because british climate means using the heater which drains the battery and in one newspaper story there's a woman who had to wait 45 minutes to charge her car because two chargers at one station were broken and there wasn't another nearby station leading to a long queue, prompting a climate denialist to say that 'they' will use market forces to make you buy an electric car despite how bad they are.
another conspiracist refers to their range as a "15 minute zone", which may be directly related to the next conspiracy guy who turns up to reveal the '15 minute zone' is a reference to 'authorities' (city planners) working around the idea of the '15 minute city', where all of your desired activities are located in a roughly 15 minute journey (of any kind) from your living space so that a) you don't spend your life in a car, and b) transport emissions are reduced regardless what kind of car you're driving and this is evidence that the "great reset" is occurring, a reference to a world economic forum idea that we might just suddenly invent free energy and then our economic system could be improved but not changed (they are very explicit about this) somewhat, and this is all the fault of the capitalist head of the world economic forum who is trying to plunge the world into some kind of utopia by imagining that capitalism can deliver the necessary environmental results for our continued existence.
then there's jorp who chimes in that this string of events is all a well-documented plan, by well-documented i can only assume he means these specific insane tweets because the wef plan is just "maybe free energy", the council plan is just "please stop driving for just a bit", and there's no electric car plan.

and it's worth mentioning everytime it comes up - the 'great reset' is the generally good principle "build better" presented by wealthy corporate capitalists who have no real interest in doing anything other than entrenching and protecting that economic structure across the world. the actual conspiracy is their belief that corporate interests could ever deliver the populace free food, shelter, and goods.

I don't know too much about Fridman other than he tends to play the role of "friendly, polite "simple" guy that specifically platforms nazis and rightwing lunatics, with a few pop-science and pop-culture people here and there, but
It's me. I'm the guy that wants to explore reality by reading books most people are forced to read / introduced to in high school.

Based on Taleb's complaints, it seems that Fridman kept trying to get him on the show by pretending to be some sort of MIT outreach program despite Google revealing it's just a podcast to platform weirdos.

Edit: I didn't know Fridman is an immigrant and moved to the USA at age 11. Whoops.
