Australia jumps on the "Ew, Chinese covid? No thanks!!" bandwagonquote:Australia's health minister, Mark Butler, said this decision taken was out of an "abundance of caution" It's the only type of caution our government is prepared to take against covid. Pittsburgh Fentanyl Cloud posted:I’ve posted about this before, but the big shift from eating out as a special thing to eating out as an everyday thing happened in the late 70s/early 80s. The USDA published a massive paper about it. Can confirm, I was born in the early 70s and the only time I remember going into McDonalds as a kid was for birthday parties. One year their freezer broke down and the icecream cake we'd ordered melted and my birthday was ruined. We got a lovely spongecake from the supermarket and put candles on it and sang happy birthday back at my Nanna's house but it wasn't the same. I turned on the local news and they’re doing a segment on how Covid restrictions have made it hard for restaurants and bars and they were hoping for a busy weekend and a return to normality. There have been zero restaurant Covid restrictions here since April 2021. I feel like I’m going insane

got a bit of a scratchy throat and raspy voice developing this afternoon. PCR negative thursday, antigen negative earlier today (just been doing daily surveillance), no known exposures (i.e. none of the small number of events i was at this past week had people pop positive afterward). i had a really good long run this morning and no other symptoms. hoping it's just the dry air or something but we'll see. happy new year covid thread...

My 2023 started off in an unusual way. I was doing dishes at the end of the day and just happened to glance out the window at exactly the right time to see what looked like a dog's rear legs and tail moving across my barely-lit back porch. I turned on the outside light and holy crap, there was a Siberian husky sniffing around. With a collar on. My wife managed to get the (very sweet, it turns out) dog to come over and get a phone number from the collar. We corralled the dog into our garage and called the number. Long story short, the owner was about a half mile away, was new to the area, and didn't have a car, so I wound up driving some dude's dog home. When they reunited, he hugged her for like a minute. I live in a semirural area that's pretty much pitch black woods with an unlit 60 mph road connecting everything, so I'm really glad I happened to look out the window when I did. Otherwise dude and doggy might have had a lovely start to 2023. Now I'm enjoying an imperial milk stout while Catzwang chills in my lap. Fingers crossed that there won't be too many more fireworks, since they keep waking my daughter. Happy 2023 y'all. May your ACE2 receptors remain pure. I feel like my chances of getting sick would be pretty high just from walking in to a takeout place unmasked right now. Anyway, Happy New Year, cavers!

This is like the most dangerous time to go to a restaurant maybe in the last three years, I don’t know how they even made it three years if it hadn’t occurred to them to avoid dining out during Covidmas 2022.
