What, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee

Possible Outcomes, in the order of my perceived likelihood:

The matter is hashed out privately behind closed doors, resulting in a single successful vote for McCarthy or Scalise.

The matter is hashed out publicly, with a half dozen votes before we end up with McCarthy, Scalise, or Upton later today.

The matter drags out until tomorrow or later, but not so long that we hit the debt ceiling. A compromise candidate is picked with just Republican votes.

A Republican compromise candidate is selected with Republican votes, but it's an empty position without power after some rule changes, like letting anyone put a bill on the calendar with sufficient votes.

The matter drags out, and a Republican candidate is picked with Democratic votes and support of the Democratic leadership, likely with some concessions regarding the the debt ceiling and the like.

The matter drags out, a sufficient number of Republicans vote present or abstain, and a Democratic candidate is picked with Democratic votes.

A Republican candidate is picked with Democratic votes but without the support of the Democratic leadership. We get our first no confidence vote for a speaker within the next two years.

A Democratic candidate is picked with Republican votes.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.
Dems should bring popcorn onto the floor and pass it around before voting starts.

The "Speaker Jeffries" thing is just the Freedom Caucus trying to stand firm in negotiations. You don't have a "private meeting" where that statement leaks immediately for any other reason except as a way to say "We won't budge no matter what" publicly.

This is good pre-drama but I think McCarthy is still speaker by the end of the day if not tomorrow.

Every time the GOP fights we cheer them on, but they often lack the backbone to follow through with any of their infighting or threats.

Bob Good (or Scott Perry? Idk) just said that McCarthy asked for who they wanted on committees and basically said that McCarthy was lying to the conference when he said the HFC had a personal wish list

E: Matt Gaetz just said "there is very little difference between Kevin McCarthy and Nancy Pelosi". Even if they make McCarthy speaker this sort of attack is gonna rub people raw.

E2: probably already assumed but Boebert just announced she's not voting for McCarthy

Twenty people is enough that McCarthy won't be Speaker. If it were only five I'd reluctantly agree with you but twenty is the new Speaker ends up beholden to the Dems territory.

1. Speaker vote is scheduled, Dems don't show up and McCarthy becomes Speaker with <200 votes
2. Freedom Caucus schedule no-confidence vote in McCarthy
3. It passes with Dem support

In the HFC “Kevin McCarthy had an opportunity to be Speaker of the House. He rejected it.” statement from three hours ago the HFC said they gave specific names willing to serve on each committee.

So its just semantic games and bullshitting, HFC is going to pull the trigger in an hour just to show they have power.

How does McCarthy run the House when he can't even run his conference? He'd be a Speaker in name only.

It's possible a few of the McCarthy loyalists might reject any alternate candidate just to spite the "anyone but McCarthy" group, due to a perception that the latter group doesn't have specific issues with McCarthy and are only doing this to demonstrate their influence.

That's the really beautiful part about this speaker election. Rather than actually being about the specific candidate, it's become a stage for factional spite and resentment to play out. How long this goes on will depend on how insistent the various factions are on asserting their strength, and how much they bitterly hate each other. This will entirely depend on how stubborn everyone involved is willing to be.

Part of this issue is instead of stamping out the HFC at its inception, or at least trying to sideline them, it grew like a boil and this is the inevitable result of the entire 2010's Republican conference leadership's deference to a band of lunatics
