Anyone know why politwoops doesn't seem to be working? I checked their whois registration and it's registered until November 2023 so it's not that! (politwoops.co.uk) No info via google (other than something from 2015) but I know it has been working 'recently' (as in I'm sure I've looked at it in the last 12 months though time is but a figment and the pandemic years have mucked up my time-awareness!)

Just a general server outage, it'd return some sort of code if it wasn't a timeout. Could be permanently down though if you haven't been there in 12 months?

Keir has basically done the standard thing for centrist politics, which is swing to your party's base to get elected by them and then swing to the center to then get elected by the public. There's enough that he's committed to (taxing private schools, revoking current legislation that the Tories are putting in place to make strikes impossible, nationalised energy wholesale, windfall taxes on Energy companies, restructuring/abolishing the Lords) that makes him distinctly left of the Tories as they are but as with basically all center left politics the question is of exactly where he lands on that spectrum post election.

He's lying about all that poo poo too, and he certainly didn't swing to the "centre", however nebulous a concept that is (but if you were going by what the general public actually want, it's way, way left of anything he's even lying about proposing). He swung to the right. Hard.

Microplastics posted:I call upon the thread for advice on behalf of a stupid friend who did something stupid This basically happened to me lol. I got caught dropping a cig, gave a fake name and an old address then decided to pay it as I was commuting there everyday. I then did it again, got caught again, gave the same fake name and address but then didn't pay it. A few years later I got a letter through my door from some bailiffs for £700 or something, which I didn't really have without going into big debt. But it was still addressed to the fake name, so now I thought I'd be doubly hosed as it looked like fraud (I wasn't sure if they had me on video for both occasions) - so I rang them to just try and pay it as I thought at least that's all I'd have to do, but there was loads of confusion about who I was and who this alias was, I was getting confused, the whole thing was a mess. I haven't dropped any litter since, now I just walk round with docked out cigarettes in my pockets so I just smell. He should probably pay it.

I honestly didn't even realise you could be fined for littering unless you were literally flytipping fridges and poo poo. Seems kinda wild and given the state of every town in the UK I cannot imagine it is enforced more than 0.000001% of the time.

There was a Panorama or whatever on it a while ago, councils employ private contractors to do the enforcement and the agents are targeted on fines issued. Examples given were things like folks getting fines for accidentally dropping something and picking it up, or pouring coffee down a drain.

You just have to be unlucky and/or in a major town/city centre where the local authority still has enough money to employ wardens to give out the notices
