lol when I was a kid stuff like 2girls1cup, rotten.com etc made the rounds, sex creeps and weird people were ever present in chatrooms and online games, and I'm not saying I turned out fine but I'm sure kids these days will manage to cope probably better than we did

obviously not excusing it or saying it's okay but acting like it's some weird new phenomenon and an immediate danger to a generation is overblown. if you let your (young) children online unsupervised and without talking to them about it that's on you.

The thing that's kind of fascinating about the elsa spiderman video complex is not so much that they're especially gross or puerile, cuz they're not, but that they're so narratively incoherent that they feel like tailor designed to break your ability to think causally. Dunno if that's gonna matter but its sure fuckin weird to me.

Taeke

Wait are you actually worried that those kinds of videos are going to break kids' ability to think right or something? Because that's kind of an insane worry to have. The human mind is absolutely capable of developing properly even when it's exposed to nonsensical, weird, narratively incoherent stimuli.

Like, unless that's the only thing you expose them to it'll just be a weird thing they saw. By the time they can actually process narrative they'll be bored of the random AI generated poo poo and look at other stuff like Bing or Paw Patrol or Teletubbies or whatever. That elsa x spiderman stuff is for the kids that recognize shapes and colors and characters, but not narrative beyond "goes left, then goes right".

I mean abused toddlers do wind up with significant long-term cognitive differences from other toddlers who grow up in non-abusive environments. Like that's a thing, humans grow and develop in ways affected by their environments. And like we do have children who grew up in such bad environments they never learn how to speak, that is also a thing, though kind of a different thing than what I'm curious about.

I don't know why it's weird to think that long term continuous exposure to incomprehensible gibberish would affect development. I don't know what the effects will be, I don't have the kind of hubris to think I know what's likely to happen, but given that Americans already have an only tenuous belief in cause and effect I can def see it getting weaker/stupider.

the thing about early child development is that basically every single second counts. so yes a toddler can probably spend hours a day watching elsa x spiderman trash on youtube and turn out more or less ok, but they are going to be at a severe disadvantage against anyone who spent those hours actually doing stuff that helped their development

that said the child that spends hours and hours watching nonsense on youtube was always going to be exposed to a bunch of trash, internet or no

i mean yeah, its a smaller part of the pie of "i am worried about the kids" than that 21st century capitalism has made attentive parenting structures (whether its by direct parents or by a broad network of friends and extended family) a luxury allowed only to the wealthy

It's new in that sense that for our generation, the online kids were outliers. Now, the kids raised offline are the rare exception. But I agree the danger is overblown. Kids are smart, and I don't think for a second that seeing a furry orgy or whatever is going to break them. That's why I said I'm not sure if it's better or worse than the old system.

We've offloaded a significant amount of the work shaping young minds to the internet, and even in the age of Platforms, it is an ideologically lawless place. It has no tenants beyond watch and consume. That's in contrast to older generations who grew up spoon-fed the narrative of their dominant culture. That narrative is still there, obviously, but it's no longer so preeminent.

I don't pretend to be nearly smart enough to make any guesses about how that difference might change society or if it'll change anything at all, but I do wonder about it.

Yeah.

A thing that's interesting is that the relationship between developing certain values and whether or not those values are adaptive or not can be confusing. Like the kind of nu-atheist dumbguy approach is that being more objectively correct about the material world is adaptive while buying into social delusions is maladaptive, but humans are ultimately social creatures and a huge range of deficiencies at understanding the natural world can be overcome by just being better at social maneuvering. And not even like being a brains genius at it, just like, being able to fit in to a society that has the right number and kind of specialists who can manage the natural world on your behalf. But its not just a matter of conformity either, the dominant narrative that Americans tend to conform to includes for one example a belief that you should just be open and honest with the police, which is for any individual person about as good an idea as teabagging a leopard (though of course that cultural value is very good for the cops themselves).

There's definitely an effect that the constant narrative to consume above produce has had on my generation and the generation below me, which is the belief that politics and morality are not things you do to others but "which TV shows do I watch." Posting as praxis at most. I'm just curious as to where its going to go since the content mills have become even more unhinged.

I made a Markov bot a couple of years back which worked by scraping trending tweets, then tweeting it the resulting garbage every so often.

It tweeted about Indian and Brazilian soap operas until it was banned for threatening to punch some politician I've never heard of.
