I think the coming recession is going to really cause a patreon monetization crisis. Make hay while the sun shines and all that. The crash is coming

america has been in a recession since like 2007 so more like coming depression, but yes I expect a lot of discretionary spending on non-Netflix streaming services, patreons, etc will be cut

however there’ll still be plenty of yospossy six figure computer touchers that can probably keep some of the more high profile ones like tafs or chapo with relatively modest cash flows

I think it's more likely that Patreon itself does something stupid and dies and whatever platform they try to move to won't have the same subscriber numbers.

e: lol the 2021 date and the publishers website today:

quote:

Zer0 is convinced that in the unthinking, blandly consensual culture in which we live, critical and engaged theoretical reflection is more important than ever before.

Zer0 Books is an imprint of John Hunt Publishing, which is now part of Watkins Media Group. Zer0 is no longer taking manuscript submissions but will continue to publish new books and all books currently in print or production will be published and promoted by a dedicated and active team

I really don't get this like I a normal guy make $50 K and I live fine and so presumably If I made $500 K in one year I could live like this for 10 years, or even longer if I go to an even cheaper place.

Edit: just don't ever get sick or have kids or go on vacation

The costs go up when you add in:
- Live in a nice house in an expensive city (this is the big one, costs literally millions of dollars)
- Send kids to private schools and an expensive college

Of course, you might say "those things are completely unnecessary," but once someone makes a ton of money they suddenly start thinking they need to do those things because they likely spend time in circles of people who are similar. It's why people like the Chapos basically have to live in a major coastal city - those are pretty much the only places where well-off young ("young" being like <50 here lol) people exist in significant numbers. In a place like Memphis, the only well-off younger adults I can think of are doctors and some lawyers (who all have high work hours). But in these other cities you have tech and media young people who make a lot of money while also having normal (or even less than normal) work hours.
