It is a glory and honour to die for our kindred people. Deploying a battlegroup there and training Azov are more important than building new barracks, base schools and PMQs. I only wish we weren’t poisoned by hateful propaganda against the Waffen SS at the annual dinner to commentate those killed by 12th SS Pz HJ when we could be celebrating the heroiam of 14th SS.

western academia has very strong taboos against this sort of thing - the way dissident academics usually get dealt with is just by keeping them separate from any kind of social movement. the message discipline around this present war has seen the erosion of many previously very strong principles, like the banning of foreign media and now outright political censorship of academic work

okay, you mean western academia in specific. im just a dumb construction worker and was thinking about narrative control in general.

seeing people sincerely argue that the soviets were actually worse than nazis has mentally prepared me for the insane censorship and outright lies we're seeing.

That said, academia in general is dying a slow death in the US specifically, between adjuncts living in food stamps and even tenure track positions not being livable, people are fleeing in general. More specifically, Eastern European/Soviet/Central studies collapsed on itself because it was “obsolete with the end of history.” Honestly, I am surprised the article was even considered and not rejected with the first pass, it probably had to be run by a higher up.

——-

The VKS was generally ridiculed for most of the early war as “completely useless” but the more information that has come to light it is starting perhaps looking like a more complex situation. One thing is that the Ukrainians have had multiple “air forces” come and go during the campaign and one of the big contributors to their losses has been the MIG 31 and the R 37 which seems to have worked as advertised as its long range (nearly 400km) and the high speed/ceiling of the MIG 31 which seems to dominate the MIG 31. More modern Western fighters would fair better but it is clear it is still a threat. (Also, the range of the R 37 would give air dominance over much of Ukraine).

Also, I have been watching a fair amount of interviews of foreign soldiers and they all seem to say the same thing that the Ukrainian side is often extremely poorly coordinated, even junior commanders often stay far away from the front lines, and Russian artillery is a constant threat. From footage, it looks like most recon missions seem like a chaotic mess with a higher chance for friendly fire and that the foreign volunteers are most often the tourists people thought. The separatists usually have poor morale but sightings of Russian regulars are fairly rare. (This is from multiple different accounts on different fronts during different periods.)

It would also probably be a more useful poll question if it was less ambiguous about who is doing the attacking. If Turkey is under attack from Russia, probably different than if Turkey comes running in breathlessly that they need all of NATO to come stomp out the PKK.
