The overarching story is that Link is the good guy who beats the bad guys, usually Ganon but not always. If you have the stomach for retro games then start at the beginning with The Legend of Zelda otherwise start with whatever is most easily available, I'd suggest Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time.

The story is Skyward Sword was when they decided "We're just gonna steal Castlevania's origin story." And every Zelda after that is basically the same, minus the origin story part that they threw in at the very end. Except sometimes he's a cartoon. And sometimes he's a little boy. And sometimes he's a 14-year-old. Zelda grows and learns before our very eyes!

the story of Link's iconic hat is that one day he found a hosed up talking hat in the shape of a bird, but it wasn't actually a hat or even a bird, but a cursed wizard who was a Minish, a race of tiny elf-like creatures no larger than your thumb. however, the hat was normal sized

this story, all the characters involved, and even the entire Minish race were never alluded to in previous games and they never come up again afterward.

so, there's really no point in hoping to find understanding in an overarching story, because there isn't one, and that's on purpose. play them in release order to appreciate how the games build off one another, and don't sweat it

Skyward Sword is my favourite Zelda game and the original wii release is the definitive version

It is also the best looking Zelda game but that isn't saying much

See what I like about people, and in all honesty, is there someone for everything. It's nice that Skyward Sword is a game some people adore. That's important.

Not my favorite by any stretch of the imagination but it does some cool things. I really liked the dungeon layouts. I really was underwhelmed by the attempt at "fancy" combat, which means you're just waiting for the right moment to swing in the right direction. It's not a fair comparison, but the best combat in games for me comes from Souls and Souls-likes. Reasonably not wanting to make games that hard, Zelda combat just feels time-consuming. Aside from the 2D games, the best 3D combat came from the 64 games, where it's just swing a bunch of times or from Windwaker which added special moves that serve no purpose aside from looking cool.

I know I've heard it described more eloquently, but I think with any big franchise, the majority doesn't really engage with it online, and so the minority of people who do end up writing a new narrative that goes against the mainstream.

Majora's Mask: initially controversial for the time mechanic/sidequests over dungeons, now it's much more popular and people like it over OOT.
Twilight Princess: well regarded at release, now you see lots of people say it's too safe, graphics ugly, etc.
Breath of the Wild: Praised as one of the greatest games of all time, and 10/10, now people are more willing to argue about durability, dungeons, so on.

I don't think (most) people are trying to be intentionally provocative (I personally do think TP really is super ugly) I just think it's a natural effect of internet discussions.

they were largely unnecessary because the game's piss easy even by zelda standards but it was still really cool to pull them off, especially when fighting darknuts. twilight princess isn't at the top of my list (the tutorial, wolf sections, difficulty, and how zant was handled) but it isn't the worst zelda by any means. it has the best companion in a zelda game and one of the better batting averages for dungeons

I enjoyed TP enough to beat it twice, once on Wii and once on HD. It's not a perfect game, and it's admittedly pretty ugly, but I think it's got the best combat and "partner" in the series, and some pretty fun dungeons.
