I've enjoyed the games on neo arachnoid where someone didn't just immediately die to their opponent rushing down the temples (what few of them there were). You can definitely see some players didn't practice for it. That was the only game in the round of 8 match one that seemed somewhat interesting.

This is from the s8 asl finals a few years ago, flash vs snow, 1h 2m 50s in, flash's micro was so good here. Various marines and vultures are one hit away from dying for a decent portion of this push and he manages to both drag them out of range and still use them to fight back while controlling the other units at the same time. Snow did some neat tricks too, the goon loses its shields and he takes it a few pixels out of range so the bunker switches to the zealot then runs by while the goon takes no hits. Flash does some three card monte stuff with the bunker at one point. You can't even tell which marine is the low one anymore until flash decides to preemptively tuck it into the bunker in preparation for another unit coming out of the fog. Most buildings don’t shoot back and many also have a buttload of health, so they’re less attractive targets compared to what you could be killing—his economy and soldiers. If you kill all the other guys buildings first instead of his workers/army, he will pick off your army while you’re shooting buildings, and then you’re in the dark, just lost an army, and he has time to recover. If you kill off his units first, you buy yourself more time inside the base to kill off more units and potentially snowball it, leaving him with no army on the spot and a reduced economy, while you can move on to clearing out buildings as well. You do sometimes see timing based strikes that are intended to cancel an upgrade by destroying specific buildings. Or in late game against Terran you’ll see people try and hit the massed depots in the main with tank/reaver drop or cracklings. But in that case they’re usually counting on the defender’s own building placement, or the absence of his army because it’s doing something else, to protect them long enough to get the damage done.

Buildings are relatively sturdy, cheap and replaceable, and as noted above don't fire back. If you wipe their economy they are doomed, but if you wipe their buildings (assuming you can chew through their HP) they can quickly build back. There have been games where someone's main got wiped late game (usually by Terran) but as they have a good economy from their other bases they just take a different main and set up production there, and they are no worse for wear generally.

I guess it might be slightly more effective on a two-player map then, especially one without much buildable space outside the mains. Then rebuilding can only start after you've cleared the army, rather than potentially taking place elsewhere simultaneous with the buildings getting destroyed.

At the pro level, if they're not microing the army it's because they're busy elsewhere, whether it's macroing at home, rallying reinforcements, setting up to defend against a counter attack, or scouting for expansions. Attention is a resource and they can get more value spending it elsewhere, you can always check at the minimap to see where their camera is looking.

That's not a bad thing. The unusual maps in recent asl were kinda interesting for a bit but ultimately too gimicky after the novelty wore off. The best games usually happen on relatively standard maps, imo
