Im kinda really, really, deeply unhappy in my soul with my work situation right now but all I can think is that a different job doing similar work wouldn't at all make me any happier. It would just be a different setting to suffer in.

Then I get annoyed at myself for being sad about work.

I dont know how to fix this.

Brother, I have had six different jobs at five different companies in 13 years. Every week I still stare at the walls of my beige prison and wonder if there's something I'd actually enjoy doing, although the longer I'm at it the more the voice in the back of my mind says you've seen enough to know it's all the same. After getting way too into the last couple and burning out, at this point I am trying so god drat hard to focus on everything else in my life that isn't work, because on the whole it's all pretty great. But it is SO difficult to pretend the place that dictates my schedule for 71% of the days in a week just doesn't exist.

I found a job where I really enjoyed the work. Unfortunately I was only able to do it for a year because it’s not really compatible with family life. Maybe I can find/make some cheap imitation.

BlindSite

Im starting to wonder if I might be better off selling my house or renting it out and downsizing to something cheaper and finding something that doesn't pay as well but has more freedom and less stress?

I've tried getting back into writing to see if I can break this 9 to 5 grind and while I was given some good feedback from a friend of mine who works for a publisher for what I've done when I get home of a night I just don't have it in me to start work for another few hours on a project.

I dunno. I just find myself not enjoying the things I used to look forward to around work and feels like I'm either angry or sad all the time.

I've been real angsty about my career lately too, like, I'm gonna be 48 soon, I've been doing this for 23+ years now, it's a combination of difficult and boring which is just the worst, etc. etc. I am Not Happy.

But. Career change, into the sciences or something, now? 2-6 more years of school, during which I'm not earning much or anything, and then start over at what, like $18/hr? We could do it. If we sold the house, moved away from our family, stopped supporting other family members with cash when they're in trouble, just pitch away this career right when I'm making decent money, in the chance that I'll do well and actually love my new career.

IMO first try getting a hobby, one that involves making things ideally, or at least completing hobby projects. Make it your happy place. Shop for hobby tools and watch hobby youtubes during work hours and then go home and enjoy doing something with your hands. I always feel better after I go out to the garage and make some shavings for a while, even if I haven't made anything particularly impressive yet. It's so much easier to face yet another day editing technical reference architectures and attending meetings about content strategy when I have something to look forward to at 5:30 besides video games and TV.

ORRR, change careers, by all means, if you can afford to, and especially if you're still in your 30s and can make up for lost time in your so-called "prime earnings years" (50s+) so you don't have to retire poor. It's too late for me but it might not be too late for you.

I truly believe that "the dream job" doesn't exist in certain industries or lines of work unless you actively create it. Like a guy with whom I was in high school band ended up as a sound engineer working for the big movie studios in LA, says that's his dream job, that's really awesome! Nobody is dreaming of being a middle manager, or running a hedge fund, or doing most other "desk jockey" types of jobs.

The best you can do in those cases is tolerate what you're doing and try to figure out ways to make it your own, either by pushing the job you have in the direction that you want or finding something/somewhere that does allow for it.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

There are very few jobs out there that anyone would consider a dream job. The ones that do exist are usually some combo of low paying, super competitive, or force you to eat poo poo for a decade before you get to do what you really want to do. If you can get through all that, then great. A lot of people waste a lot of years of their lives never making it.

I’ve settled into a job that I’m decent at, is flexible, and I get along with my coworkers and boss. It’s not my dream job, it’s certainly not exciting, but it pays the bills and doesn’t involve me breaking my body to do it.

I have gone through three waves during my career where I came close to quitting and making a career change and I never did it. I think I always convinced myself that no job was really going to make me happy. I just had to pick something that I could deal with, and I think I finally accepted that.

I think a lot of the soul crushing jobs would be much more tolerable if we did 4 day work weeks.

My goal is to make enough money where I can cut down to like, 4 8 hour days or heck even 4 9 hour days.

I'm 15 minutes into the new Trigun and I'm already annoyed with a bunch of choices the show has made.

Not really spoilers, but just in case:
  • The show starts with space station vash and nails. That's stupid.
  • The show has Meryl learn that vash is vash almost immediately. That's stupid.
  • Robert De Niro doesn't seem compelling.

Still love it, 5/5 stars.

We did 4 day weeks for three months during COVID, and I would gladly take 80% of my salary to work 32 hours a week again.

iirc that’s only if you are offering it as an in-app purchase. It’s the same reason you can’t sign up for Netflix on your iOS app - they’re dodging the fees from Apple.
