Thanks for the playlists, found some great tracks. Really enjoyed: Wicked & Bad - Bob Vylan Human - Anavae Grapefruit - Tove Lo Crying in the Club - Phoebe Green I don't listen to as much new music, so I'm going to cheat and include songs I heard for the first time this year: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6jqwXW3cTzJfp75XdTB9iq?si=4d56e139c44e4e5d

Great link, thank you! I've been so into Alvvays the past month or so. I've been a big fan of Antisocialites for a few years now and I absolutely adore Plimsoll Punks, but I've just now been getting into their other albums. The one song I can't stop listening to is Marry me Archie.

Lotta great music this year! I'm enjoying going through everyone else's lists. I had to really think about what went on to each of my top 10s this year. In no particular order (except for #1, that was actually a pretty easy choice for both NZ and international). Top 10 New Zealand Albums Top 10 International Albums (Edit: now with fancy grids) cptn_dr fucked around with this message at 02:26 on Dec 27, 2022 |

caroline polachek also sings on oneohtrix point never's long road home, but through a bunch of wobbly vocoders, but they did a version where her voice is mostly unprocessed and it rules https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUbfgRI8G38 i still prefer the original because i love vocoders but both are great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5azY0dH67U

I’m ready to get roasted for this but I think the best rock record I’ve listened to this year is an anime soundtrack https://youtu.be/MtuFP3Tl1kE It’s a 12 episode show about high school girls (with one in particular suffering from massive social anxiety, which is what drew me in in the first place) starting an indie band that feels very true to the realities of being a musician. 5e musical direction is heavily inspired by J-rock bands like Asian Kung-Fu Generation so aside from being in Japanese it fits right in with the 90s influence a lot of indie rock is hitting at the moment, and they made a whole 14 track album just for the show, and it rules up and down. There’s one AKFG cover at the end but aside from that they’re all original songs. https://youtu.be/H7ZyZdqLb5Q I’ve been listening to it a bunch over the last week, even separated from the context of the show it holds up.

Modest Mouse meant a lot to me as a teenager and I still love them today. This loss really sucks. I'm spending my New Year's depressed and listening to old MM albums. According to Wiki, he appeared on every MM album except for Good News when he took a brief hiatus from the band, so I guess I'll listen to every album except that one.

MM are not huge for me personally but Green is a major part of why Lonesome Crowded West is a classic.

I think I'm the only one who loved Father John Misty's Chloe. I really appreciated the song craft and really digging deeper into that Harry Nilsson vein he had going. It's a lot like the the sound of Pure Comedy with the lyricism of God's Favorite Customer. Q4 is as darkly funny as anything he put out, and he uses humor to a devastating effect on Goodbye Mr. Blue. Buddy's Rendezvous feels like an early Tom Waits song. I'll be happy to defend the album. I think in a few years, it will become more appreciated.

Yeah I’ve been offline the past week, and just learned today listening to a new episode of a podcast that mentioned the passing of Jeremiah. My friend and I have been to like five MM shows. I’m devastated. Can’t believe it. It’s nearly as tragic as when Gerard Smith from TV on the Radio died from lung cancer in his mid-thirties. gently caress cancer.

Both Belle & Sebastian, and The New Pornographers announced new albums today. B&S's comes out this Friday, The New Pornographers new one comes out March 31st. Honestly, as a long time B&S fan, I haven't been super into anything they've put out in maybe 15 years. They just keep on doing the same thing over and over. The New Pornographers, their last album wasn't their best, but it's still a great album. And drat, do they give some of the best live shows I've been to. Also, I've been digging this new album by Fireworks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZGXw2RqXGE

I got to see the New Pornographers in a fairly small venue right as they came off touring for Twin Cinema, and it was amazing. I was on a mezzanine basically almost above Kurt Dahle and got to watch him play with a seeming effortlessness that just blew me away. He had a full pint glass he could pickup and sip from while keeping time with his other hand. Legend. Always surprised he doesn’t pop up on more canadian bands in need of a drummer! Twin Cinema is still on my all time albums short list..

Metro service at L'Enfant plaza goes to like 11:30 I believe, so you should still be good getting home after seeing shows at The Anthem in DC.
