Contrary to popular assumption that isn't really what it's about, it's more like a self-help series giving kids pointers on how to get along with/deal with others, some of whom might be assholes. It covers a lot of territory and doesn't have one specific thesis As to why conservative weirdos get all obsessive about it, my guess is that it has something to do with the idea of something sweet and positive also having a dark underbelly (most of which is projected onto it by fans who do things like write the characters into post-apocalyptic Fallout stories and poo poo, because lol at the inherent cognitive dissonance and all) but there's enough character personality depth that they feel there's something there to bite on without the wild fan theories seeming like farce.
