DeadFatDuckFat posted:Watched all of Violet Evergarden over the past couple weeks. Most of it was pretty good, but that finale movie was Bad Felt bad for my wife when she watched it. I didn't really watch it but on occasion I'd tell her a dumb twist was gonna happen figuring it was too stupid to happen. Movie made me apologize. I had no idea. I still feel awful about it to this day.

Is this a case of an adaptation change from the manga or just a nosedive into stupid? I'm not familiar with Violet Evergarden but bad endings pique my curiosity.

violet evergarden's a light novel, it was part of a whole line of submissions to a contest kyoani held where all of the winners got adapted into shows. there wasn't generally much reason for kyoani to edit most of them, i think violet evergarden was one of the only ones where they went past like the first few volumes

violet evergarden is really pretty and melancholy but i don't really care for it. doesn't have a lot to say and the stuff that happened before the story always sounded more interesting to me.

Imo it was the laziest possible way to give the main character a happy end. It also seemed to me to be the exact opposite of the themes of the show, but I'm still kind of collecting my thoughts about it
