question: when people say pickups are not reverse wound, can you not just switch the leads to reverse polarity?

In a single coil pickup reversing the leads reverses the "phase", but not the polarity of the magnets. Also, depending on the pickup design, reversing the leads might mean sending some noise to the amp that would otherwise go to ground.

Modern middle pickups for strat are both reverse wound and reverse polarity (RW/RP). Flipping one but not the other gives you "out of phase".

It's less likely you would need to mess with phase/polarity on a humbucker.

Fralin Pickups has several blog posts on the topic (which I'm choosing to believe here). https://www.fralinpickups.com/2017/01/23/whats-deal-polarity/

You'd have to completely unwind the pick-up and re-wind it with the coil going in the other direction to make it work like you are thinking.

Alright thanks, there's conflicting info on whether the 57/62 middle pickup is RW. Apparently some are and some aren't depending on when/where they came from

Major Operation

I think if the middle pickup is RW/RP on a strat set, the white and black wires will be reversed at the point where they attach to the pickup.

On the 57/62 Strat pickups, it looks like there was a separate SKU for the set with a RW/RP middle. From the pictures it seems that the middle pickup's wires are reversed (as expected), and what would be the white wire is yellow instead.

A guitarist playing bass is never gonna fool anyone anyway, get the vi and make it obvious. Or an 8 string.

It worked for Carol Kay. If you're interested in doing proper bass technique like slapping or popping or whatever yeah that'll take actual time but if you as a guit player just pick up a p bass and play it with a pick it feels really good. I have a Gretsch junior jet bass and it's pretty friendly to guitar players with a decent range of sounds.

It worked and works for plenty of people, Lemmy is a prime example, but there is just something in the way a guitarist approaches a bass that is different than how a bassist approaches it. I think it's mostly about the role in the music, not really about technique, since plenty bass players play with a pick.

Which is not to say you shouldn't pick up a bass if you play guitar. You should, it's fun as hell. But try not to just think of it as a big boy guitar, it's its own thing in many ways.

If you have out of phase pickups, you’re required by law to use “Peter Green” in the description of the sound.

Hey thread, you guys and dolls have been really helpful so far. I found this Squier body I've been holding onto and tried it with this neck I was showing you yesterday, the one I got for $4 at the thrift store, and just slid it in there just to get an impression. Any chance I've stumbled on a good fit? Laying a tape measure across it just now I get 26" from the bridge to the nut and 13" to the octave fret, which says to my naive sensibility that it may be the right length. I think the color doesn't match but maybe something could be done about that. Does it look like a fit? Is the action too high? I hate to be over-optimistic but it looks like a fit to me. (These pics don't show it but there's no screws in place and no screws in the neck yet. I just pushed it into place and it was a snug fit.)

Grimey Drawer
It's definitely high. If you can raise the saddles up enough not to buzz and get the pickups high enough to sound good, it should be fine. But you might run out of room to raise stuff up once you put strings on.

When I went to replace the neck on my Classic Vibe tele, I found that the neck pockets on the CVs (and maybe the Affinities?) were about an eighth more shallow than on the proper Fenders. And once I sat the necks heel to heel, sure enough an eighth off. I guess they do them that way specifically to make an obvious tell if someone put a Fender badged neck on a cheap body.

When I had that aftermarket neck on my CV, I could juuuuust get the saddles up enough but if I ever wanted to raise the action I was going to have to think of something else. I settled on taking that neck out to the band saw and taking an eighth off. I ended up having to shim it after the fact, because you are absolutely not going to freehand that operation to a thousandth of an inch, but it all fits together now and plays fine (for a hack job).

I could imagine putting that neck to the belt sander for a second or two if you think that's a good idea.

The color doesn't match at all does it? That yellow stain with this royal blue, I dunno.

I don't think the color is a problem, from the pictures at least. That particular blue isn't really to my taste personally, but that's just me.

As an owner of both, the Bass VI can work as a special-sounding bass but playing any chords that low down is going to sound awful, it's just too muddy. Get a baritone if you want that.

If you want to do actual basslines though then it's great fun, but you're almost required to use a pick given the string spacings.

If you want to get a regular bass sound, get a regular bass. You can use a pick but finger playing is something you can pick up in a few weeks (though it takes a while to really master)

I purchased a cheap starter Yamaha Pacifica to learn guitar. Considered whether to get an acoustic (because apparently people say to start on that) or electric but settled on an electric because I already have an audio interface for my mic on my computer so driving it doesn't cost any extra for an amp, and more importantly, I think it looks cooler.

The next guitar I’m set on is one of the up scale Pacifica’s with the P90. They’re neat guitars.

Edit: Actually I’ll probably just get one like this and swap the pickups down the road:

Wrap some Teflon tape around the threads of the trem arm. If the trem block has a blind hole(doesn't go all the way through) drop the spring from a clicky pen in and screw the arm in.

god drat i wish fender would actually have some standards for what they're offering at the base level, especially since prices have gone up

like come on the base level jazzmaster basically not being a jazzmaster (HH guitar with a tune-o-matic bridge, no rhythm circuit) is embarrassing and stupid

Major Operation

Oof. Yeah, I wouldn't feel good about paying $1200 for a Vintera JM to get pickups that look correct.

Seems like there's a luxury tax for the offset/Jazzmaster mystique. It's expensive to look like a slacker now.

A G&L Tribute Doheny might be superior guitar at a lower price, but the bridge doesn't look right and the pickups are their "magnetic field design" which (I believe) use ceramic bar magnets.

the vintera strat i just got was $899 which is funny cause i bought an american standard for 900 in 2006

fender should hire me to revamp their brand
you know a new strat cost $250 in 1960 which adjusted for inflation is $2500 now :O

One week on with the PRS silver sky se and katana 50 mk 2. It's been amazing, I don't think I've ever played so much in a one week period. There's something about the neck of silver sky that makes it so much easier to stay relaxed and feel the music. With my epiphone Les Paul I always felt like playing was a bit of a fight, now it's a dance.

I trust this thread more than most, so thought I'd check with you guys, also, it's a good opportunity to try some guitar maintenance.

I'm getting some buzz and deadening on my Tele, most noticeably around the 5th fret on the 2nd string and 6th fret on the first, but a little around that zone. Would this be the time for a slight truss rod adjustment? Loosening to introduce some backbow? Measurements look good at the 12th fret, but that's my first time using the ruler I got for Christmas, so I'm not expert.

I wondered if that might be the case, but they're not old enough to be beat up and I hadn't noticed this issue until today and its been my least played guitar lately (as in, played twice a week rather than every day) so I wondered if the neck had shifted with the cold and attendant humidity lately (my heating is currently screwed and awaiting repair).

time for my bi-annual instance of Actually Posting A Little Bit of Music:

i was able to get a tone i like a lot out of the plumes -> the RAT. what i kind of started doing was i realized that the plumes can really brighten stuff, and with the humbucker being kinda dark and the RAT filter being dark (and the high end fizz of a RAT being not super desirable all the time) that really helps.

this isn't EQ'd and was just recorded with one AT2020 trained on my amp (very dark sounding), but the tone is one i like.

https://vocaroo.com/18ffqBETLEZy

and you can hear some of the sort of playing i do.

i would very much like an amp with more presence, the hot rods are really dark... but i'm real poor atm so that's probably not happening soon.

Jeff Beck disliked the tone you're getting with that JB so much that he died. Hope you're happy.
