I've been catching up on my backlog today and I noticed something, why does the "floor" of the rings in Mexico seem to be much squishier than elsewhere? In the lucha matches I've seen everyone seems to sink into the ring more, whereas elsewhere they stand on it. I know there's foam padding in between the canvas and wood boards, is it just thicker in Mexico? I was under the impression they were harder there.

Because lucha rings are a lot stiffer than US rings so they need the extra cushioning

Which companies are you watching? Because I don't think the CMLL ring has any more give to it than American rings, probably less. Some of the indie rings are really lovely though and seem to have a lot of give.

I think a lot of the smaller Lucha companies just used boxing rings which aren't built for bump taking

What are you looking at?
The ring used when I was with USA Pro in the early 00s had a giant dip in the middle that would throw everyone off-balance.

Big Lucha is definitely a ring quality issue and probably in part due to not using a tight canvas, their mat cover is very loose.

Are there any interesting stories involving the Heart Punch that don't involve Ox Baker or do involve surprising places it's been used? Like I know Mean Mark did it, but I'm talking like, is there anyone notable doing it now or did it catch on anywhere overseas or with a woman wrestler, etc? Just tell me something interesting about the Heart Punch that isn't "those two guys who fought Ox Baker died of heart attacks so they made it an angle."

There was a story in the Apter mags in the 80s where someone (I think it was Ox Baker) gave Apter a heart punch and he spent a few days in the hospital afterwards. Story had some hilarious photos, but my Google skills are failing me at the moment.

Can't speak for every company but I know for New Japan wrestlers will get the finish, time and maybe some bullet points for the match but the rest is up to the wrestlers in terms of lay out. It's probably why their Rambo's end up being bad since those type of matches need to be carefully laid out.

Has American TV wrestling always been plagued by tv directors who have the attention span of a child on large amounts of sugar? Why? Also did someone new get put in charge of AEW camera direction? AEW's presentation used to be slick, but holy hell it's gotten almost as bad as WWE in recent weeks where the director cuts like eight times in one two second exchange or basically ends up missing or almost important stuff and big moments like when Phoenix took a one winged angel off the stage.

What is wrong with just basically shooting wrestling like, I dunno, MMA where you basically sit on Hardcam until you need to switch for something important or unless you need to cut for censorship or to hide something during a taped show?

Things like jump cuts and "bouncing" the camera when someone takes a bump makes the moves seem to have more impact while minimizing the "fakeness" of bumps. It's overdone to hell though im not saying I like it but that's why it's done.

Also, AEW's lead video engineer did die unfortunately young back in October, so... yeah. Weird changes to production are kind of inevitable under the circumstances.

In the old days budgets were low so they didn't have enough cameras or know how to just rapid fire cut all the time.

I heard from someone that Kanemaru is a producer, but I'm not so sure about that (contract status, not a NJPW trueborn)

They brought in the heir apparent to Kevin Dunn. He's fixed most of their audience sound problems, but maybe introduced some bad WWEisms.

Whenever a wrestler enters the ring during a NOAH match, they show a bio at the bottom with stat rankings in katakana. I've seen Power, Stamina, Technique, Speed, etc. but what is "Tension" supposed to be? Kzy was ranked a 10 during his tag title match with YO-HEY, so I'm guessing something related to willpower or toughness? I've seen a few wrestlers use "Mr. High Tension" which is usually an approximate translation of "Ironman", but I don't know if that's related. And is there any place that tracks those stats or are they just for fun?

Betting for novelty stuff like this is capped very low and the odds are steep so if you bet $50 on Roman you are only getting a return of $5 or $10. And the site hopes that while you have your money in to bet on Roman you make a few other bets too.

There were a few people who bet on Lesnar to beat Undertaker the year the Streak was broken and made some decent money, but yeah, the scripted nature means most of the time the bookies know where the storylines are headed so you're not gonna get much return betting on who's actually gonna go over.

It's such a minor amount of money that WWE employees were using inside info to bet on finishes and it gave away the results of WWE PPVs for months and the sportsbooks did nothing about it.

In Japanese "high tension" can mean someone who is excited or energetic, it's one of those weird cases where even though they're English words, the definition is fairly different.

I feel like the main reason for putting Michael Cole over Jerry Lawler at Wrestlemania was because the TV segments were doing good ratings so they wanted to extend it, but I definitely also remember reading that they used it as a opportunity to screw with betting companies because OBVIOUSLY Lawler was going to win.

That goes a little more closely with the "ironman" translation I've seen. I think it also has some spiritual context because I've seen "soul" mentioned along with it too. In this context with Kzy ranked a 10, it would make sense to mean something like heart, or an undying spirit.

Important wrestling question, does a foreign entity have to abide by American labor laws when firing Sami Zayn for being the wrong nationality? Err wait, what is my question?

I have only a baseline understanding of things but it would be pretty fun if this somehow led to professional wrestlers no longer being independent contractors
