Also they would 100% do that for every show regardless of whether or not it did well. Not to mention the fact that we are now creating a system where in addition to paying a monthly fee you’re now expected to also shell out extra money regularly to keep your favorite shows alive.

I know this is some dumbass late-stage capitalism bullshit, but why don't companies like Netflix just do a Kickstarter-esque campaign stating "Hey, we are cancelling this show, but if you donate this amount of money then it gets another season!" Seems like a cheap and easy way for these assholes not to reach into their pockets to renew a show.

I'm convinced its not actually about the money at all. If they gave Pantheon any sort of actual promotion, I'm convinced it could have been pretty successful. The executive in charge would gain nothing from the show being successful, but by burying it and trying to claim they can save money by writing it off they can make it look as though they are do something productive. If they were actually trying to maximize profits they would have found a way to sell season 2.

I don't think socialism/communism would make these idiots go away because even streaming services would still need to operate with a budget, and there is always going to be incompetent idiots that need to justify their existence.

I think command economies are pretty notorious for having even more fuckery from on high, and are subject to even more arbitrary executive opinions, as well as the content being provided being determined more by what whoever is in charge thinks should be done rather than hunting out things that audiences would respond to. Communist East Germany's videogame tiny industry was subject to a lot stronger regulation against violence because of some weird officials' opinions.

One of the things that free markets are best at is providing an environment where a lot of things can be tried so that the things that catch on can succeed and the things that don't can fail. So much of the entertainment industry's successes are weird things that seemingly came out of nowhere, or could've easily been discarded early on as too dumb to bother with.

Of course the current state of TV being dominated by streaming means that there's kind of a bit of confusion over how they use metrics to track what's good or not. And while streaming in general is starting to have more and more competitors come onto the scene, only a few of those competitors are interested in or big enough to do animation, so Netflix is feeling the crunch of competition, but the animators it rejects don't have anywhere to fall back on. And of course the Discovery/Warner/HBO gestalt is being run by a nut.

I dont see the point in applying economic and social models to entertainment.

AMC was making a product. Sadly the people involved got replaced. If the product does well the current people dont get the credit, but if it does badly the current people get the blame.

I agree with the post that inorder for companies to write off IP or entertainment products the copy right should be forefit. Remember thats how its a wonderful life got into public domain.

Also animetion has had a huge lead time. I m remembering the story of clerks the animated series and how kevin smith was all "why the gently caress did you buy it then?"

The network bought it because they had nothing and while the show was being animated they got a hit with who wants to be a millionaire.

I just learned that Glen Howerton, Sam Richardson and Constance Wu play the main cast in Velma. I'm quite intrigued by that. Thise are some good comedic voices.

I know nothing about Mindy Calling, though.

I figure that show will be cancelled and erased in the middle of the second episode and anyone who saw it by this point will be forced to undergo a lobotomy, so that Zaslav is still eligible for that sweet tax write off.

Because let's face it, in today's media landscape it's way easier to reboot/reskin an old franchise than to make a new one. And that's not a slam against Kaling or anybody that made this show, it's just a fact that new IP has a hard time getting off the ground and you can look at the trail of dead/canceled originals lately. I mean I think we all know that even if the reviews are wrong and this show is loving amazing, this show might as well be DOA since it's starting behind the 8 ball with changing a bunch of characters which raises a big online stink with people who like the old versions (even if it's just veiled racism and those people never would've watched the show anyway) and most importantly, it's a cartoon on HBO Max in 2023. But if it were just parodies/pastiches of Scooby-Doo characters instead of the actual names, then it would never have been greenlit.

Like I'm positive that if Venture Bros. were made today it would absolutely just outright use the Johnny Quest license/characters instead of making their own parodies.

I caught some Mitchell and Webb the other day, and they were making jokes about Velma being a lesbian back in the 90s. I wonder if there's something about her design that lends her to queer readings; but yeah, it's certainly been something people have been thinking about for decades.

Honestly, I'm still interested in the show. I hate that reactionary "they changed it now it sucks" impulse that seems to be feeding into some of these reviews, radical transformations are interesting in and of themselves IMO. But these reactions are also the point of the thing, this show is obviously designed to be transgressive and provocative, and to take a series defined by a banal kind of wholesomeness and then gently caress with it a bit. It's funny to see these reviewers flinch, so I guess the comedy of this series is already working.

I find the kind of homespun gosh gee wilikers vibe of the original to be soporific and vaguely gross, so I'm very happy to see this come around.

i feel like if you going to do an show/game/etc with a throughline plot, you have to make the characters likeable and have variety, even if they can be dickish. they have to have actual chemestry and care and heart and poo poo and bigger themes then just "lol edgy". its why venture brothers, smiling friends, helluva boss, harley quinn, and even rick and morty, work.
