100% this. It's kind of reminiscent of OOTW/Another World in that respect, except OOTW was much more scripted. Rain World is so explicitly unscripted that it becomes a serious goddamn issue when any given screen transition could hold a bullshit instadeath to any of the roaming predators. Or when one happens to track you directly to your most recent hideout at the end of a tile-wide corridor, kills and drags you off, and then when you respawn (and subsequently disappear from its mouth) it turns around and eats you again, four loving times in a row with absolutely no possible recourse, tanking the stupid loving rank you need to maintain to progress at the stupid loving biome transition gates.

I love and hate that loving stupid wonderful game, and gotta say a price increase is going to be a hard sell.

For some reason I thought this was that game a guy on /agdg/ was developing that was basically freelancer but the game revolved around fighting giant space snakes/whales/other things in between your cargo runs

That's not really how the game works though. When you die the whole day restarts, and almost all of the creatures are moved off the map and have to re-enter from spawn points, simulating them emerging from their own shelters after the rain. Unless it was like one of the pole plants I guess? But those don't follow you. :confused:

I can totally believe you were killed over and over because it's tough out there but not sure how it happened to you like that.

did everspace 2 end up being any good? i liked everspace 1 well enough but i didn't think the genres of space flight sim and roguelike meshed together very well which sounds like was the major thing everspace 2 changed

There's an early access build on Gamepass, I played the first couple missions. It's nice to look at but it feels just kind of "there" without an interesting hook like Chorvs and some boring characters. Who knows how it will end up though!

I like Everspace 2, it's a more traditional game, I'd compare it to Freelancer.

Every time I see a spaceship fighting/trading game it reminds me that I wish Rebel Galaxy kept with its 2D plane Age of Sail gameplay for the follow-up rather than trying to make Privateer again. Everyone always tries to make Privateer again.

Been waiting for the full release but it looks to be coming along well. ES1 is one of the few SP roguelikes I actually like, although there was no way I was going to beat i a bunch of times for the full ending.

This is all great looking. I've always thought the lack of tutorial on swimming hurt the game a lot. Tapping the jump button makes you go faster underwater, just like in every other game, but in Rain World it also rapidly depletes your air. It's such a bad trade-off it's practically never worth doing, and if you want to go faster in water you're better off just wiggling your sluggy tail like a tadpole (seriously, it works). It's real difficult to get anywhere underwater if you're assuming it works like Mario or w/e, which makes things even worse for anyone unfortunate enough to find their way into the drainage system at the beginning of the game.

I know they're not exactly equivalent genres but I like difficult/obtuse stuff like La Mulana etc so I'm pretty sure I'm in the Rain World target audience, it just hasn't clicked yet

Everyone is scaling back on content and I suspect is has to do with the fact that you can't borrow money for free anymore. I wonder if this will cut across all the major publishers.

Also I bet one of those cancellations was the return to the good version of Ghost Recon : (

I made a series of bad investments. Tarantula farm. The bottom fell out of the market.

Did not know anything about Rain World. There are too many games being made for me to keep up! It looks like one of those games I would play for a hundred hours and burn out on before I got good enough to beat it, so I'm going to skip it. But I read the wiki for an hour and the background lore sounded very cool. Lately, (spoilering because the subject is adjacent to core themes of Rain World that aren't clear at the start) I've been spending a lot of mental energy thinking/worrying about existential issues, specifically stuff about consciousness, what happens when we die, the apparently temporary nature of the connections and relationships we build with other people and creatures, and I don't want to immerse myself in what looks like a pretty bleak and nihilistic situation. Ending spoilers: I know you reunite with your family at the end but there's still sentient life stuck in the cycle and that's a bummer.

The whole concept of being a cute little animal that reminds me of my pets, being caught in an eternal loop of furtive survival that seems more like manic torture than living, is probably not something that someone with my disposition for depression should spend a lot of time with

Yeah, there are far too few capital ship spacegames around. Let me captain a single big-rear end battlecruiser, directing gun batteries, dispatching fighter squadrons, and launching giant missile salvoes. But it seems like almost all games that aim for that scale are either higher-scope strategy games or the endgame of clunky 4xs.

Maybe Ubisoft should stop investing money in project for 8 years and just kill them when, by year two, the design document isn't finalized and there's nothing to show for it. I'd love to get another Beyond Good & Evil but whatever that game may end up being is going to be a goddamn mess and maybe have 1/100th the amount of charm and creativity the original game had.

Also whatever Skull & Bones ends up being. I'm sure it'll be delayed again before its release and be a total mess.

It is baffling how there have only ever been two good pirate games, and one of them was an AC game. Dunno why that's not a very popular genre instead of basically not existing.
