:asoiaf: somehow we found a disk with all these images, just a mashup of what must have been some kinda TTRPG art stuff or like science fantasy pics. it was so cool & weird i wonder if somebody archived it. The one i remember most was like a 4 armed weird dragon alien thing. But this was before you could burn cds, it was an actual disk you could buy, with what seemed like actual art

Search for it here: http://discmaster.textfiles.com/

I would not have been surprised if these store names and images were created by AI. They all sound so incredibly fake

I watch a lot of dead mall youtubers and by far the scariest one I’ve ever seen was one where they went into the back corridors and got lost among all the fire doors, some of which were locked. After seeing that I wouldn’t even want to try in a well staffed mall.

Last time I was on the boat (incidentally same trip that a drunk student disappeared, but he most probably just fell off the roof and died in the sea because the boat didn't stop, despite him being reported as missing and last seen climbing on the roof, and the crew only called the marine rescue services hours later) I literally spent more than a quarter hour trying to find the way out of the corridors after taking a nap in my cabin. I went round and round and everything was dead ends or closed doors with signs saying "EMPLOYEES ONLY". Twice I almost stumbled into some other people's cabins as they had the doors open. Then I found a loving map and... one of the doors marked "EMPLOYEES ONLY" was the door to the elevator landing. Dunno who'd closed it or why the gently caress anyone would put a sign like that on a door like that but it was pretty intense for a while because I wasn't sure I wasn't dreaming.

e: This, for fifteen minutes. Not much sound at all because almost everyone else is in the bars:

ee: I do recognize the fact that it's very much better than drowning in the icy sea, watching the boat get further and further away from you.

I knew most of these. Sam Goody, KB Toys, Dalton Books, Waldenbooks, wetSeal, and I had at least heard of stuff like Casual Corner and Fashion Bug. Also how did you not hear about Sharper Image they were a cornerstone for hacky jokes about 90s gadgets.

I am strangely nostalgic for walden books. They were always so small and chaotic compared to the vast organized expanse of a B&N.

We had a loyalty card with Waldenbooks back in the day. I think it was 10% off any paperback book, which was a boon to word hungry child me. I knew they were going down when they switched to a points system and then eventually discontinued even that.

There was an unusually small Walden across the street from me, but business must have been too slow to support it. When they closed they were replaced with a more vital store with a brighter future: Hollywood Video!

They closed after a year and were replaced with a Subway.

My first job out of college was running a calendar stand/kiosk during the holiday months outside of a waldenbooks, which was owned by Borders at that point. I was officially a borders employee but I worked out of the waldenbooks but ran a kiosk in the middle of the mall walkway. Looking back it was kinda fun but very boring. I went through 4 sudoku desk calendars while working there, so i solved 1460 sudoku puzzles in around 4 months, and I took a pretty cool 2006 outhouses calendar and one of those make your own poetry ones that had a bunch of word magnets. Those magnets lived on my fridge for many years.

Looks early electrical, I think I see the windings for the heating element behind the bread, and a cord socket to plug it in on the bottom right. The pegs in the left may be buttons to turn on either side.

I worked for Waldenbooks while in college. A pretty good job for retail. We'd have after hours shift to shelve books which was great. Play what ever music you want, and there was something very soothing about putting books on the shelves without any real supervision. Just working at my own pace and relaxing. When Oprah's book club was going, she did a bunch of beach reading books, and then dropped one of Toni Morrison's novels in there. That resulted in a whole lot of soccer moms getting an insight into the Black Woman Experience in America. Some handled it well, and some not so much.
