My Driver's Ed final test was in a blizzard. The teacher said we'd pass if we kept it on the road and didn't hit anything. I'm really not a great driver but I am certified better at it than a Tesla

No they're not. There should be no or little overlap between the mirrors, and then there's no blind spot

so long as they're set up like this there shouldn't be a blind spot, but you'd be surprised how many people don't even realize the mirrors are adjustable

because of that when reversing you had to grab the passenger seat and basically turn around during the driver's test in nj, although i did mine about 20 years ago so idk if it's changed since then. if you didn't you failed and a lot of my friends had to re-test with 6 extra hours of instruction because of this

lol when i visit my parents and drive their car, i always have to adjust the mirrors for myself like this, and my mom complains that i do it, and i'm like "why do i want half of my mirror showing the side of the car i'm driving? i'm not going to hit myself!"

anyway, i got my license in florida, so the driving test never left the parking lot of the dmv, they didn't care that the 3-point turn took me like 7 points, there was no parallel parking at all, and the only thing i got points off for was failing to signal a turn around the end of a row of parking spots (i *did* signal before the start of the turn, just my turning radius was wide enough that i never straightened out to signal again)

that's not how federal budgeting works. congress doesn't start with "okay we have this many dollars to spend, what can we fit in there?" congress isn't limited to "ooh, we'd love to fund that program, but we gotta prioritize this aircraft carrier."

congress decides what they want to spend on, then the feds borrow whatever tax revenue doesn't cover. that's it.

it's like people saying "ooh if we could just ditch those wasteful manned spaceflight programs we could get so many more robot probes to mars or neptune or wherever." no we couldn't. cutting a program doesn't "free up" diddly poo poo, it's just that many fewer dollars that get borrowed. that's it.

got mine in florida too but the first time i tried i insta-failed for loving up the three-point turn (cuz i wasn't exactly clear on where they wanted me to like, aim the car after the turn, so i just sorta wiggled it back and forth a few times until the instructor was like "okay you failed let's go back to the office")

you only have to wait a day to try again so i just came back the next day and did fine lol

I lived in NYC for ages and my general opinion was "ehh, it's okay, having everything within walkable distance is convenient I guess"

Then I moved to Cambridge MA for shits and grins because I'm full-remote and Cambridge is still fairly doable car-free. Within a week my opinion on NYC changed to "jesus christ I am never living in that fuckawful hellhole again what the hell was I thinking"

There's definitely incipient carbrain here but whitey's houses were too precious to just bulldoze en-masse to build six-lane stroads everywhere. So there are vast swathes of residential-only streets but it's mostly semi-detached and multi-family housing and there are no mandatory front yards or any of that stuff. Need to get myself an ebike because things are just spread out enough that walking everywhere is too time-consuming.

The solution isn't to let dangerous driver stay on the roads but to start actually investing in a society where we're less reliant on driving. Yeah I mean I would massively prefer not even owning a car but it's pretty hard in most places in the us.

At least I've managed to basically not have to commute by car ever except for a cumulative total of maybe a few months' worth of days spread out over a really long time.

I did have to drive to school for a couple years in high school and in retrospect I really don't think I should have been doing that and it's kind of a miracle I managed to not not injure myself or someone else (this does not mean I never got into an accident)
