Here is a street dish from India called Beda. (At least that's what my dad calls it, and what I have seen it called. But google is telling me it is called Paan. I think it's a North/South India divide thing.) It is a Betel leaf, with a bunch of other poo poo folded in. I dunno what the other stuff is, but apparently it varies by vendor, yet it is always very colourful. And when you see it made live, the guy making it has a thousand little jars on his cart and it's awesome to watch him work. It tastes disgusting, and it stains your teeth but my dad loves it. He eats it after a meal. Not as a desert, but more an after meal freshener. The way you eat it is you go up to the cart and order one, (or however many you want), and the guy spreads the leaf out, works his artistry spreading various pastes and sprinkling various stuff on the leaf, then you fold that leaf up and shove it in your mouth all in one. They make candy that supposedly have the same taste. But to me, these just taste like chemicals. In fact when we brought some home with us, one of our neighbours coined the phrase "dettol lollies" for them. They are called Pan Pasand. Edit: Here's a video of someone making it in a shop. But in my memory, the bloke at his cart on the street was doing it with so much more flair and elegance. And didn't need all those fancy garnishes and plastic containers. You were lucky if you got it wrapped in some newspaper, if anything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CJVchRveOU BrigadierSensible fucked around with this message at 10:54 on Jan 15, 2023 |

Do those fancy leaves contain the stimulating nut, or is that a different thing altogether? Cuz I don't think anybody chews on betel for its delicious flavour, no matter how much they may claim so, it's more like a cigarette analogue (sometimes it's even packed with tobacco for added addictiveness)

It looks like all of these would be so soggy with the amount of sauces put on everything.

Futanari Damacy posted:For the leaf, you're thinking of khat Nah, that's a different thing, I'm thinking about betel nut, which is traditionally areca nut with slaked lime and sometimes other stuff wrapped in betel leaf. The leaf itself isn't a stimulant, afaik, but the areca nut is. Wikipedia seems to suggest that Indian paan also customarily contains areca.

areca is an addicting carcinogen, yes. gives you mouth cancer. also to be consumed w/ pickling lime (calcium hydroxide)

Supposedly it's way loving worse than even tobacco chew

# ? Jan 15, 2023 17:28 |

smoking increases lung cancer risk 20x, betel nut chewing increases oral cancer risk 6-8x according to the few studies done, smokeless tobacco increases oral cancer risk 4-10x depending on study. so it's just that smokeless tobacco's been studied more prolly

I had Paan with my friends family in Kolkata, it was kind of weird but it was cool watching them make it. There, they would set up the leaf on a huge block of ice while they put it together so it was cold when you popped it in your mouth.
